The Best Defense
A Good Offense
Pairings: Hiei/Kurama, Kuwabara/Yukina
Warnings: Slash
Summary: A rare example of a *insert crossver characters here*-goes-to-Hogwarts story done right.
Comments: I’ll be honest here. I love crossovers. I adore them. I worship them. I went through a six month period three or four years ago where all I read was crossovers. And most of them are among the worst pieces of crap I have ever read. This is not one of those crossovers.
First off, the author is fairly good about not just pulling things out of her ass. While there’s a couple things I’m sort of iffy about in the beginning (Hiei being able to give Keiko enough magic to go to Hogwarts, for example. I’d be more forgiving if Keiko had actually had a role to play in the 50-odd chapters currently up), the author obviously does her research and has an endless supply of random trivia to add flavour to her fic. It’s well-written, in a manner that is reminiscent of the Harry Potter series. The author mostly manages to balance out the huge character cast relatively evenly, though she does tend to concentrate a tad more on Kurama than I think she probably really should. But I have a nostalgic affection for Kurama (as one half of my first yaoi OTP lo those many years ago), so frankly, I don’t exactly object to much. I would suggest that any readers be familiar with both series, though, unless you’re the type who likes to find new series through crossovers.
Edited on June 19, 2005 to add a new working link since ff.net is being their usual wonderful self and decided to take it down.
Edited on October 1, 2005 to add a new link with all the chapters up to date, as well as add the sequel to it.
The Best Defense: Multi-chapter, complete.
A Good Offense: Multi-chapter, incomplete.
