Comments; This is a fic that I first ran across well before I had ever seen Naruto. (I hope I didn’t rec it already…) It’s- not dark, exactly, because I associate dark with something bad happening, but it’s a much darker interpretation of Sakura than the general, and it’s an interesting interpretation of Sakura, and of Sakura and Sasuke’s relationship. My favorite line by far is “She is perhaps her harshest critic, because she is the only one in Konoha who expects anything to come of herself.” Because that is something I do see in Sakura, and it’s something I like about her. And about Naruto, for that matter.

Comments: I am an unashamed Murata fangirl, and this is a nicely written, well-characterized fic. With a very unusual pairing as well. (Okay, so my true OTP for Murata is Murata/Yozak, but I’m kind of a slut on OTPs). And I liked how Murata’s plans changed, because I think that Murata strikes me as a kind of subtle control freak, and I delight in having unexpected things happen to control freak.

Comments: I’m going to do something rare here. I’m reccing an author rather than a fic. This is because she is the sole author for whom I will read and enjoy Hyotei fics. Hyotei always bored me, for whatever reason, but her Jirou absolutely captivates me. And Oshitari and Gakuto’s relationship is just funny and sparkly with her, and hell, I even almost like Shishido/Ootori. (Those two bore me, and I’ve never been able to figure out why. Hell, I even love her OC character. Atobe needs a scarily competent person to manage his fanclub, especially one who will call him an idiot when he needs it. And there honestly isn’t a fic on here that I wouldn’t rec.
…But the real reason I’m reccing the author, I’ll admit, is because her roommates arc has 15 or 16 stories in it, scattered among 4 or so categories in her memories. And I didn’t really feel like going through and ordering them all in nice, tidy little links and reccing them, nor did I feel like reccing them one by one.
So go read. Now. In my experience, the order you read it in doesn’t particularly matter, though there may be some side references to other fics from time to time.

Destiny’s Child
Characters/Pairings: …The entire casts of Ranma and Sailor Moon. Focusing largely on Ranma/Rei, but with a little Ranma/Akane and Ranma/Hotaru.
Summary: Born 400 years earlier, Ranma fell into the spring of the Drowned Young Girl. His curse can only be activated by near-boiling water, and he has resigned himself to a nigh-unaging existence. When he is offered a cure by Mistress 9, he accepts, and comes to live as Hotaru. How do the events of Sailor Moon S change when Hotaru’s secretly an overpowered 400-year old martial artist with ridiculously bad luck?
Comments: Nowadays, Ranma/Sailor Moon crossovers have utterly lost their popularity. Probably a good thing, considering how bad most of them were. But this one is the one I will always fondly remember because the author does a very good job of working things out from the original premise. I know Ranma’s a Gary Stu in this, but in all honesty, I don’t have a problem with a Gary Stu as long as the story remains fun and entertaining. I have a weakness for very long, completed multi-chapter fics with interesting premises, and this is well-enough written for me to really enjoy it. Hell, the fact that I’m reccing it five years after first reading it should say something. If only that I remembered it for that long.

Under a Different Moon

Summary: (Author’s summary) “Born to royalty, Princess Usagi will take over her mother’s kingdom some day. That is, if the Dark Kingdom does not conquer them all, bringing the entire world beneath their crushing might. The only hope of the Moon Kingdom is if the mysterious Sailor Moon can recruit her Senshi and take the battle to the invaders. Swashbuckling adventure as we see our heroines in a new light, leading their troops into bloody, desperate battle to save all they hold dear.”
Comments: First off, this fic takes some very large liberties with Usagi’s characterization. She acts like an airhead because if she acted as ruthless and as driven as she actually is, she knows that she’d be assassinated within a week by Metallia’s assassins. This is the very basis for an awful lot of the story, and my characterization-stickler side screams in agony at the thought.
On the other hand, the part of me that buys any book that looks like it might have Machiavellian maneuverings within loves it. And it’s an interesting idea that’s really a tad more different from the original Sailor Moon series than I prefer, but is nonetheless very well-written for what it is. (I almost wish he’d done it as an original fic, even though I’m enjoying seeing how he translates Sailor Moon stuff into the context of an actual war. But I’m still enjoying it.)

Comment: It’s a cute, funny fic. I like the way she characterized the girls - Tatsuki feels like she’s at about the right point of embarrassment when she has to go get Rukia for help, and Orihime’s as cheerful as ever despite her situation and Rukia’s just “…” And it’s just a cute, fun little fic.

The Use of Power - A crossover with the Wheel of Time

Summary: When Ami falls into the world of the Wheel of Time, she must do whatever she can to help defeat the Dark One.
Comments: You know, a while ago, I just kept seeing Sailor Moon/Wheel of Time or Ranma/Wheel of Time crossovers, and I never quite understood it. Admittedly, I last read the Wheel of Time series five years ago, and only through the fifth book, so I’m not exactly a big fan of it. But you’d think that a series with NO SIMILARITIES TO SAILOR MOON OR RANMA WHATSOEVER wouldn’t be a practical crossover target.
But, whatever. THis rec isn’t about the inexplicability of a Sailor Moon/Wheel of Time crossover. It’s about a fic that made it work, and work well. For starters, the author takes full advantage of the fact that Ami is, quite frankly, a genius from a far more technologicly advanced world, when she starts working to defeat the Dark Lord. But that isn’t it - a lot of the fic so far is about the type of culture clash that would occur if a girl from modern Tokyo fell into a world that was mostly medieval. The sheer inability of each other to understand on occasion what Ami’s world was like - it’s a nicely done outsider POV on our world, that also serves to further illuminate their world as well. I could ramble on about this for forever, but it’s 11:15 and I have to be at work at 8:00 tomorrow, so I’ll shut up.

This Is Our Place

SUmmary: In the far-off future, when Naruto has become Hokage, the three of them are still together.
Comments: This is just a nice little fic. It’s short and sweet and I like the calm and comfortable air about their relationship. In another twenty or thirty years, I can see the three of them developing like this. I like the little details the author adds - Sasuke’s unnamed genin team, that he plans on testing against some missing nins in the area, Naruto’s cheerful disregard of the usual unstated rules about what the Hokage should be (dignified, for one), the way they’re just quietly sitting and eating ramen together, just everything. It’s just a nice, quiet, calm fic.

Pervert
Characters/Pairings: Sakura/Naruto/Sasuke, a little Kakashi/Iruka, Tsunade, Jiraiya, Hinata, Ino.

Comments: A short, funny little ficlet that I really enjoyed. And if I write any more this will be longer than the fic.

Suiren
Characters/Pairings: Sakura, Inner Sakura, Anko, Ino. Cameos of various other characters, but these are definitely the focus.
Warnings: For a technically-gen fanfic, there’s an awful lot of yuri. ♥ There’s also a little implied NCS dream sex, but not terribly graphic I don’t think.
Summary: While Naruto and Sasuke are training for the third round of the Chuunin exam, Sakura is doing some training of her own. Really, she should know better than to try strange jutsus without finding someone more experienced to talk to first.
Comments: I think this is probably my favorite long Sakura-centric fic. The author is a good writer and the concept is very, very interesting. I don’t want to give away the surprise of the fic, but it’s an interesting idea, and there’s not enough fics exploring weird side effects of jutsus. And I like the way she characterizes Sakura, and I love the way Anko is characterized. This fic made me love Anko, and makes me want to read more fic about her. (So write it, dammit!)

Coming Home

Comments: I just really liked the dynamics of the fic. The sex was decently written (I skim sex scenes, so I’m not really that clear on it, but I didn’t see any weeping ninjahoods or anything). The way Naruto liked her as a woman, while Sasuke liked her as a soldier was great. And the pictures that Sasuke took of them having sex were just wonderful. It was sweet more than sexy, to me, but then I sometimes think I have the sex drive of a dead rotifer. (Anyone who knows what that is gets fifty billion points) And the author even illustrated the pictures too.

And it’s cute and funny and I do like the more domestic Ed/Al(/Winry) fics. And the ending was funny.

Comments: I was so not expecting to be able to believe this. But it is so much what Tomoyo would do, and Kurogane would grump and swear and give in because to do otherwise might put Tomoyo in danger. And it’s cute, and I like the way it develops Kurogane’s character.

Emperor’s New Clothes

Summary: Akito visits Ayame and demands the finest suit of clothes for an event that will be the happiest of the Soumas’ lives.
Comments: This is nicely done. Even though Akito’s weak, and scarce able to move about by himself, he’s still intimidating and dangerous. The sharp bitterness of Akito’s speeches, and Ayame’s reactions to Akito are just very well done. And even while dealing with Akito, the author didn’t make the mistake of making him un-Ayame-like. He’s still absurdly cheerful and flamboyant, and the way he just throws himself full-heartedly into the project is just so Ayame. But it also shows how even the most cheerful Jyunishi is still affected by Akito, and it’s just fascinating to me watching them interact. And the concept behind this is just wonderful.

Dear Foolish Little Brother

And the ending is funny.

Such Great Heights

Comments: A nice Yondaime fic. I like the oddly distant air to the fic - even though I usually am not as fond of fics with no actual dialogue. But I like this Yondaime - a ninja who stays in love with his childhood sweetheart, but whose relationship with her isn’t as simple as it could be, because he’s still a ninja, and there are parts of him that no civilian could ever understand. And it feels right that he didn’t lose his virginity to her, and he doesn’t always remember that she even exists when all his missions are pressing around him, but she’s still there waiting for him. Because anyone in love with a really good ninja is someone who has to accept that they aren’t going to always have time to remember them. And the OC isn’t obnoxious because, frankly, she doesn’t have enough of a personality to be obnoxious. And, dude, how could I not love Naruto’s mother being part of a family of ramen-restaurant owners?

Pure & True

Comments; You know, I absolutely love Lee/Sakura friendship fics. And this is cute and sweet and just so very much how their relationship should develop when Sakura’s grown up a bit more and Lee’s still, as always, there for her. You know, sometimes I almost regret that I don’t like the Lee/Sakura pairing, because I honestly think that Lee is the best person in the series. He isn’t as complex or as interesting as my more usual favorite characters, but I love the way he takes lines that should be utterly cheesy and completely devote himself to accomplishing them.
