Isshin Explains It All

Warnings: See summary, and think about it. Can that situation not be traumatizing?
Summary: Isshin decides that it is time to give Ichigo the Talk. You know, if Ichigo were less well-adjusted, he’d be making some therapist’s fame and fortune after this.
Comments: If you keep in character, I don’t think it’s possible to go wrong with a “Isshin gives Ichigo the Talk” fic. Poor, poor Ichigo.

Comments: Yes, I know, it sounds like all those awful teeny “Let’s make Tohru a supermodel and Yuki and/or Kyou princes, and have them meet.” I promise you, this isn’t like that. It’s funny, and I’d say the author managed to do a wonderful job of getting everyone’s reactions to Tohru’s newfound fame perfectly. Especially the scene where Ayame takes over the photo shoot with his own clothes. The author doesn’t make the mistake of catapulting Tohru too far into fame too fast, and it’s just a very, very well done fic.

Warnings: Spoilers for ep. 51. As dark as you’d expect a Tom Riddle and Ed fic to be.
Summary: When Ed becomes a teacher at Hogwarts as he searches for a way home, a young student with a dark nature catches his attention.
Comments: Well written for a complete crack concept. I like this sort of vaguely plausible crack that takes itself seriously, and I rarely get it. I think the way the author had Ed and Tom interact is interesting, and I think her older, more cynical Ed (who makes Snape look like an easy teacher, at least in the amount of work given) is a very interesting look. And, well, I’m sure you know my weakness for interesting crossovers.

Lessons
Characters/Pairings: Iruka
Warnings: A much darker look at being a ninja than I usually see.
Summary: Iruka finds that he has difficulty stomaching some of the harsher parts of being a ninja.
Comments: This is just…wow. It’s gorgeously written, and Iruka’s reaction to occasionally having to fight and kill children, and the way it weaves into him being a teacher is perfect. I need more Naruto fics like this.
Notes: My week from hell seems to be continuing indefinitely. I damn near burst out crying when I saw the excel spreadsheet I need to make into something approaching literacy. It’s going to take me weeks if I don’t figure out a workaround.

Because We Three Are One
Characters/Pairings: Naruto/Sakura/Sasuke/(Kakashi?)
Warnings: Non-graphic threesome.
Summary: A good relationship should be messy, awkward, and not very nice, at times. But the rest of it makes up for it.
Comments: The second paragraph of the fic caught my attention and made absolutely sure that I was going to enjoy the fic: “But in the bedroom she forgot that she had the potential to be the strongest kunochi in Konoha’s history and he forgot he didn’t know everything and she became the meek little girl she had always become around him, and sucked her stomach in to look prettier and tried to remain in a sexy pose and struggled not the cry when he fell miles short of her expectation, whilst he cursed himself for not knowing how to reach out without force.” Because, um, wow. If that doesn’t sum up how Sasuke and Sakura’s relationship would probably start, we’ve been watching different series. And the author continues to just nail the characterization, and the fic just sparkles. And, you know, hints of Kakashi joining in the fun don’t hurt.

This Is Not a Love Story
Characters/Pairings: Hinata, Neji, Lee, Tenten, Gai. Main pairing Hinata/Neji, with hints of various others too assorted to name. (Including Izumo and Koteshi! *very quiet squee* Someday I will figure out my irrational love of very minor characters in the Naruto series.
Warnings: Het content. A few very small mentions of yaoi.
Summary: Hinata comes to Team Gai for advice. Team Gai is their usual batshit insane self.
Comments: There is only one word I have to describe this fic, and that is funny. The author has a knack for well-timed humor, and I thought Lee in particular was very well done. Neji is perhaps a little off, characterization wise, but I found the trade-off in humor well-worth it.

Work In Progress

Summary: When Sasuke lost his family, he lost some part of himself. With his team, he starts regaining them.
Comments: Yes, my OT3. For some reason, this line amused me far too much: “He figured Naruto would say it was his brain that he’d lost, so he didn’t tell Naruto his theory.” But I thought the author struck the right reaction for Sasuke on finding himself abruptly domesticized by his teammates: “I must go and achieve vengeance now. Bye. *flees in panic*” Overall, the author did a nice job of nailing the characters.

Morning Routine

The Cleverness of the Ninja

Summary: When Sakura hits puberty, she comes to Tsunade for advice.
Comments: This just cracks me up. I don’t know how much I can say about it without spoiling the main joke, but it cracks me up. Jiraiya so would have done that when he was younger, too.

Sandwiches

Warnings: Some discussion of het sex
Summary: Shikamaru and Chouji are completely, and utterly, whipped.
Comments: I know I wasn’t going to rec any more tonight, but how can I resist when something like this appears on my flist? My favorite couple of lines:

“If I slacked off on that with her, she’d do something really horrible. Like get out of bed in the middle of sex and pin my hands down and just stand there, completely naked and with that terrifying grin on her face, until–”

Chouji rummaged frantically in his pack for another bag of chips to distract himself with. Eating would help him regain his composure. Food made everything better.

Shikamaru paused at the sight of his friend’s reaction. “Not that she’s ever done anything like that…of course,” he muttered without much conviction.”

Her Father’s Sword

Summary: Tenten is determined to be a ninja.
Comments: Tenten centric fic is rare. Non-Tenten/Neji fic is rarer. This is a look at a young Tenten, determined to become a ninja despite her mother’s wishes. It’s swwet, charming, and… how do I put this? It fits with the Naruto series. A lot of the fics I read and love don’t. This one doesn’t really seem like it should, but something about Tenten’s determination 4to become a ninja just brings back a lot of what I love about the original series.

A Wizard’s Staff

Comments; If you’re a Terry Pratchett fan, you will see that and immediately click. If you’re not a Terry Pratchett fan, I suggest you go to the bookstore, go to the fantasy section, and get every single Terry Pratchett book. And then come back and click. Although it’s probably still pretty funny without knowing the source of the song.

Summary: Kurenai reflects on life, her students, and Asuma.
Comments: Kurenai’s always interested me, and I don’t know why. I think it’s partially because my frustration with Kishimoto’s inability to write female characters has somehow backlashed into me liking his female characters for no apparent reason. But, anyway. This is a very well-done fic, exploring Kurenai’s reactions to the aftermath of the Sasuke in the barrel arc. (Yes, that arc. Spoiler warning here. Not much of one though). And I really like the way the author writes Kurenai’s and Asuma’s relationship.

Hunter’s Moon
Characters/Pairings: Kakashi/Iruka
Warnings: …Hell if I know how to warn for this. Violence?
Summary: When Iruka is hunted by a close friend, he survives.
Comments: THe author wrote one of the best action scenes I’ve seen in fanfic in ages. Her characterization of Iruka is one of the best in ages - yes he’s a kind and caring teacher, but he’s a ninja teacher. With all the ruthlessness and capability that implies. Too many people concentrate on Iruka protesting the decision to test the rookies for chuunin less than a year after they became genin, and forget just how many kids he’s raised to be genin, knowing that they’ll be risking their lives. But, um, this fic isn’t about that. It’s about Iruka’s abilities as a ninja, and it also does a wonderful, wonderful job of capturing the complexities of being a ninja, and having a relationship with ninjas.

Metallic (Gravitation)
Characters/Pairings: Tatsuha. Uesagi the elder.
Summary: Tatsuha reflects on his family at Christmas.
Comments: You know, Gravitation is one of those series that I had a very brief fling with and have had almost no interest in reading any more fic about since then. Except for Tatsuha. I have no idea why I love him so much, but I do. And this fic does an excellent job of a broody Tatsuha. It does feel like the first chapter in a series, though, rather than a one-shot. I wish the author had made whether it was a one-shot or not clearer.

Gravity
Characters/Pairings: Slight Byakuya/Rukia
Warnings: …Does it count as implied incest if they’re not genetically related, and met as adults?
Summary: Rukia is now a Kuchiki. Now what?
Comments: The author does an excellent job of conveying the feel that a fic about Rukia and Byakuya requires. It’s imagery-laden without being overbearingly so, and it says little, but conveys so much more.
…And I’ve been wanting to read Byakuya/Rukia fic since the first ep with him in it. And I was beginning to think that it didn’t exist.

Let Him Eat Cake
Characters/Pairings: L/Light
Warnings: Graphic sex. Yaoi.
Summary: L and Light have sex for the first time.
Comments: Okay, this is my least favorite genre of fanfic (PWP), but Harukami’s absolutely wonderful characterization skills won me over and convinced me to love it. It’s the details that make this fic for me - the way L just announces that Light will be his first before they’ve even officially decided they’re going to have sex. The way L decides to get some more cake immediately after they finish. THe way L licks the strawberry-flavored condom to analyze the flavor.
…Oddly, from my comments, I’m usually much more of a Light fan than I am an L fan. But Harukami’s L just sparkles in this.
Notes: I have had the world’s shittiest week, that started with the laundry machine flooding the house three inches deep in places and hasn’t gotten a great deal better since then. I haven’t been reccing because I haven’t had the bloody time.
