Evil Be Thou My Good
Characters/Pairings: Harry, cast, demons.
Warnings: Graphic torture. I’d rate it NC-17 for that alone. Not particularly sexual torture, though a little could kind of be read as such. REALLY DISTURBING. Also, really ruthless Harry.
Summary: As a child, Harry unlocks a puzzle box and unknowingly unleashes a hell beyond his imagination. As an adult, he finds he cannot escape that hell.
Comments: Very, very well-done. Very much reminds me of Simon R. Green. I found Harry’s characterization to be kind of disturbingly plausible. It’s a very different look at Harry defeating Voldemort from anything I’d seen before, and I thought it to be very well done.
Very long one-shot, complete.
Grace
Characters/Pairings: Sage/Shinou
Warnings: Character death and angst. And m/m pairings, obviously.
Summary: The Sage has many, many regrets.
Comments: I read this, and originally wasn’t going to rec it because angst and betrayal is really not my thing. But then she continues it in the comments and resolves it with a happy ending. And I may hate unresolved angst, but I am a sucker for angst with happy endings. And it’s just really kind of an interesting look at the Sage.
Notes: I was going through my Star Wars bookmarks looking for recs, and all I can say is good GOD, I have bad taste in Star Wars fics. I found genderswitch. I found Mary Sue!Obi-Wan. I found mpreg. Where Obi-Wan, and I’m not joking here, required further “genetic input” from the father, Qui-Gon, while he was pregnant in order to survive. And Qui-Gon had impregnated him under the influence of a high fever, and didn’t remember a thing. And Obi-Wan refused to trap Qui-Gon into marriage by telling him about his pregnancy. And Anakin was soul-bonded to the fetus. What. The. Hell.
One-shot, complete.
Their Unspoken Names
Characters/Pairings: Sage/Shinou
Warnings: None
Summary: Shinou watches the burning of his childhood identity, and considers.
Comments: Just…a really interesting look at the Sage and Shinou. One of the really kind of frustrating things about them, for me at least, is the fact that they don’t have names. But this is the first fic I’ve seen dealing with a possible reason that they don’t have names. And I just find it interesting.
One-shot, complete.
Jedi Exiles
Characters/Pairings: Obi-Wan/Bruck, OCs, Qui-Gon, and many others that I don’t care to list right now.
Warnings: Um. None for now. If the author ever gets around to finishing it, it’ll be rated for sex, but right now it isn’t. Slash pairings, I guess.
Summary: 8 Jedi padawans discover a terrible secret: a Sith. Not knowing who the Sith is, nor able to convince the Council or even their masters that the Sith even exists, the padawans break from the Jedi in order to pursue their findings.
Comments: If I want to read a damn good honest-to-god epic, I know where to look. This is just an excellently written space opera on a grand scale, and you just don’t get that much in fanfiction.
Long multi-chapter epic, divided up into four parts. The first part’s complete, the other three parts only have intermittent parts written, which may or may not be too frustrating for you.
Untitled
Characters/Pairings: Gwendal/Anissina! Well-done Gwendal/Anissina!
Warnings: None
Summary: Gwendal overhears a conversation that he wasn’t meant to overhear, that changes the way he views his childhood head.
Comments: Wow. Just wow. A beautifully in-character fic that does an excellent job of changing Gwendal’s and Anissina’s relationship into something that at least admits the possibility of romance. And did I mention the characterization? Anissina’s characterization in particular is just perfect.
One-shot, complete.
One Last Adventure, sidestory
Characters/Pairings: young!sage
Warnings: None
Summary: The young sage learns a lesson. And wonders if it perhaps has broader applications than his mentor dreams.
Comments: I am eternally fascinated by the Sage, and this is a wonderful look at how he might have been.
One-shot offshoot of a not-yet-posted longer fic, complete in and of itself.
Untitled
Characters/Pairings: Yuuko appears in all. And, separated by comma if they appear within the same drabble, separated by semi-colon if they appear in the next drabble, are: Dumbledore; Yuki; Hanajima; Watanuki, Ed (by implication), Ryoma (by implication), D (by implication)
Warnings: None
Summary: 7 drabbles here, five of which I rec. (The other two I don’t even know the bloody series they’re from, but I’ll assume they’re good if you know what they are.)
Comments: Yes, this is further evidence that xxxHolic can be crossed over with anything well. And some of the interactions are just amazingly well done. My favorite line was “She’s a tall woman, with an impressive rack, but something about her makes you keep your eyes slightly above her collar bone at all times.” describing Yuuko, because if that isn’t how Yuki would view Yuuko, I read the wrong manga for them both. And the last drabbles is sheer genius. Because I said so.
Multiple drabbles, complete.
Fragmented
Characters/Pairings: Byakuya, Kaien, Kuukaku, Yoruichi, Urahara.
Warnings: None
Summary: The heirs of the Four Noble Houses were great friends, when they were children.
Comments: Honestly, going into this, I wasn’t really sure I’d be that interested in it. But this is beautifully, amazingly done and I love and adore the character interactions, and how the author just makes them work. I’d thought of Byakuya and Kaien as friends before, but this makes it work beautifully. And the note of bittersweet hope it ends on it just perfect.
One-shot, complete.
Learning Experiences
Characters/Pairings: Sage/Shinou, Christine/Jose, mentioned Christine/lots of other people due to the nature of the business. Ahem.
Warnings: Um. Not graphic sex as such, but a lot of the focus of the fic is how Christine decided to go into pornography, and how she views sex. Really right at the borderline between R and NC-17.
Spoilers: If you don’t know who Christine is or who she reincarnated as, STOP RIGHT HERE. Even my comments contain spoilers.
Summary: Christine wants to do something shocking, something she’s never done before.
Comments: Wow. This is just a beautiful, amazing look at Christine. I’m just amazed at the odd way parallels between her life and her first life are drawn, and how she’s so different, and yet so much he same between lives. And how she changes and it’s just… I’m babbling, and I know I’m babbling, because it’s just. That. Good.
Edited because I just realized: It’s friendslocked, but on a community, so all you need to do to read it is join the community. I wouldn’t usually recommend f-locked fics, but this is so worth it.
One-shot, complete.
Tourism
Characters/Pairings: Shinobu/Mitsuru
Warnings: On-screen het, implied slash?
Summary: When Mitsuru lands in the all-girls’ dorm of Cherrywood, his relationship with Shinobu gets complicated.
Comments: I love love love this author’s characterizations. She gets the female Shinobu scarily perfect, and Mitsuru’s confusion at dealing with a female Shinobu is just wonderfully done. And damnit, Yukie Nasu goes to such efforts to provide such wonderfully cracktastic canon AUs that I just wish that more people would write about. (Especially Here is Devilwood where Cool Mint-Shinobu tells Lemon Herb-Mitsuru that Mitsuru had promised to go to the end of the world for him, and Shinobu was merely taking him at his word.) (Yes, I’m a fangirl, shut up.)
Notes: Damnit, my brother was messing with the IP addresses on his computer, so that the two computers have the exact same IP address, which is causing problems with the network, and my internet connection. And now he’s not here to be bitched at, and if he takes much longer I’m going to end up fixing it damnit. And I have no idea what he did.
One-shot, complete.
The best policy
Characters/Pairings: Shinobu/Mitsuru
Warnings: Yaoi. Graphic sex. Spoilers for episodes 5 and 6 of the OAVs.
Summary: Mitsuru is puzzled by Shinobu’s behavior during the Igarashi incident. After all, someone so evidently perfect could never have something so mundane as an unrequited love. Right?
Comments: I liked this fic as much because of how much went unstated as what was actually said. The author is good at making what isn’t said as obvious and as important as what is said, and I don’t get that enough in fanfiction.
Note: 600th rec! God, I have no life.
One-shot, complete.
Bluebell
Characters/Pairings: Bluebell/Prince
Warnings: None
Summary: Destinies are immutable, but they may not go quite as you expect anyway. Just because a princess is born destined to be imprisoned within an ivory tower until she is rescued by her prince doesn’t mean she has to be happy about it.
Comments: I just thought this was a very interesting and well-done look at some of the common tropes of fairy-tales. I’m somewhat of a sucker for fairy-tales, and have read multiple collections of them. And this is just a beautifully done look at a much more human princess than any fairytale will ever show.
One-shot, complete.
Public Spirits
Characters/Pairings: Shinobu/Mitsuru
Warnings: Yaoi
Summary: The ghost Misako refuses to leave until someone grants her her dying wish: to kiss the most popular guy in school. Shinobu grants her her wish.
Comments: I’ve been on a Greenwood kick today, and this is one of the very few decent fics I’ve found so far. It’s…I don’t quite agree with aspects of Mitsuru’s characterization, but then I do, and I’m not quite sure of which it is. The ending scene is just wonderful, though.
Notes: Yeah, I’ve been gone. I had a series of problems with my computer, and just got out of the habit of it. I’m attempting to get back into it, though.
One-shot, complete.
