Summary: In a world where Kira is not Yagami Raito, what will Raito do when Kira kills his father? Team up with L, of course.
Comments: This caught my attention from the very beginning. The simple concept fascinates me. Raito…I believe even in the series, he would be reluctant to kill his father. If someone else kills him, Raito would stop at nothing to get them. Teaming up with L is the logical thing to do. And Raito’s still Raito in this - you get the occasional creeps from him, but he isn’t so overwhelmingly ruthless as he is with the notebook. He’s more ruthless than he is without the notebook in the series, but that’s because, well, he’s chasing the criminal that killed his father. And it’s just gah. The way they’re so similar and so different simultaneously and the way they interact without being the murderer and the detective is just fun to read. And it’s helping me get over my occasional squick at L/Raito when Raito’s a mass murderer and L’s the one assigned to catch him.

His Son’s Father

Warnings: Raito being his usual creepy self.
Spoilers: For through about 20
Summary: Yagami takes a break from the Kira case and have a fatherly chat with his son.
Comments: This is just…she nails the characters. She nails the feel of the series. She nails the layers and layers of meaning in Raito’s words. She nails the guilt Yagami feels for his family. Everything about this is just… Most fanfics, you can see where they came from canon, but you can also tell they’re clearly different. It’s worse in anime/manga fandoms than with books, because we’re dealing with entirely different mediums. Even acknowledging that, this could easily have been a scene from Death Note itself. It has the same quietly creepy, layered feel. And, and, and, just read the fic already.
One-shot, complete.
