Crossovers, Miscellaneous, FireflyJuly 6, 2006 7:31 pm

Refuge - The author would prefer not to name the series it’s crossed with. I disagree, but I’ll follow the author’s preferences. If you’re that curious, skip to the bottom of the fic just long enough to see the names. Not that I did that. Of course not.
Characters/Pairings: Mal, Zoe, Wash, Inara, River, Simon, Jayne, Book
Warnings: None’
Summary: Serenity is hired to transport some refugees.
Comments; I have to say, at first, this didn’t quite work for me because I misinterpreted where they were going with this. However, upon reread, it works, and works really rather well. It really manages to fit both series quite nicely, and I have a huge weakness for that.
One-shot, complete.

Indistinguishable From Magic
Characters/Pairings: River, Zoe, Wash, cast.
Warnings: None
Spoilers: Major for the movie
Summary: Some things can’t be fixed. But some things can. And River, who knows the secrets of the government, can fix more things than most.
Comments: Any series that has a canonical character death will generate a whole subgenre of fix it stories. And sometimes, it produces damn good ones that keep everyone in character and keep things moderately probable. The characterization in this just hits the nail on so many occasions and this has quite simply the best River perspective that I’ve seen yet. It’s sane enough that you can follow it and it can actually contain a plot, but it’s still most definitely River, with all that implies. And it’s just a damn good fic.
One-shot, complete.

Nights of endless conversations
Characters/Pairings: Simon/Kaylee, Mal, Dream, Book, Destiny, Jayne, Death, Destruction, Wash, Zoe, Inara, Desire, Despair, River, Delirium
Warnings: None
Summary: The Endless converse with the crew of Serenity.
Comments: Wow. This is just beautifully done. The character matchups of which character talks with which Endless is very well thought out; I particularly liked Inara’s meeting with Desire and Despair. And the meeting with River and Delirium, who was once Delight, was just perfectly perfectly done and led to the absolute perfect ending line.
One-shot, complete.

Firefly 5:41 pm

In Stitches
Characters/Pairings: Simon-centric, cast.
Warnings: None
Summary: Everyone on the ship is assigned chores, ostensibly at random. Simon is assigned laundry.
Comments: You wouldn’t think that you’d get any sort of character insight out of an idea this simple, but you do. The writing’s beautfilly clean, and the characterization is just nailed. I particularly liked Mal, Zoe, and Wash’s conversation about what was changing due to Simon doing laundry. It’s a wonderfully done piece showing Simon really beginning to become part of Serenity’s crew, and accepted as one of them.
Notes: Yeah, haven’t been reccing again. I have no excuses except that I suck.
One-shot, complete.

Crossovers, Firefly, The SandmanNovember 24, 2005 10:11 pm

Maybe Someday
Characters/Pairings: River, Delirium
Warnings: None
Summary: River is one of Delirium’s.
Comments: Why did I never think of this? It makes complete and utter sense in that way that River and Delirium make sense - sense and nonsense at the same time. And Sandman really is one of those series that can be crossed with absolutely everything, can’t it?
Notes: Sorry about not reccing. I’ve been busy with RL stuff.
One-shot, complete.

FireflyNovember 17, 2005 3:27 pm

Bed and Breakfast
Characters/Pairings: Kaylee/Inara
Warnings: Sex
Summary: Inara deals with the conflicts invoked by her job and a relationship.
Comments: A wonderfully written, perfectly in-character fic regarding these two characters. Kaylee/Inara is one of those pairings I’ve liked since I watched Firefly, and there is just not enough good fic about them. And this is just wonderful.
One-shot, complete.

FireflyNovember 16, 2005 12:39 pm

Diagnosis
Characters/Pairings: Inara, Simon/Kaylee
Warnings: None
Summary: Inara diagnoses a problem, and prescribes a treatment.
Comments: Short, cute, and surprisingly insightful. It’s odd. I tend to like fics that contain Simon and Inara conversations, despite the fact that I can’t stand them as a pairing. (Although I have no idea why I can’t stand them as a pairing, so maybe if I knew why, I’d figure out why I like them so much as friends). But is a pretty good fic centering around Inara talking with Simon about how good Kaylee would be for him, so how could I not like it? Even if, yes, I’m still not a big fan of Simon/Kaylee. I still think she’d be good for him.
…I’m weird.
One-shot, complete.

FireflyNovember 15, 2005 12:39 pm

By Æsculapius, Hygeia, and Panacea
Characters/Pairings: Simon, cast.
Warnings: None
Summary: Simon is, above all, a doctor as he settles into Serenity. A series of vignettes showing Simon doing basic physical examinations on each of the crew.
Comments: A very nice series of vignettes that does a good job of showing how each of the crew would react to medical checkups. By far, the one that amused me most is the Jayne one, but all of them have something interesting to say about each of the cast, and Simon’s interaction with the cast. I honestly couldn’t say my favorite, because I liked them all.
Series of vignettes, complete.

FireflyNovember 14, 2005 7:38 pm

A Day of Prayer
Characters/Pairings: Simon-centric, a little Simon/Kaylee, Mal, Inara, River, Wash, Zoe.
Warnings: None
Summary: Simon has a little adventure shortly after he joins the crew when some unsavory types ask him to nurse their boss back to health.
Comments: This takes place right after the first episode, and the character dynamics reflect that. Simon’s still immensely unsettled by his new position as ship’s doctor, and runs into some problems when it comes to, well, depending on Mal. All the characterizations are nicely done, and it’s just a nice, moderately long, plotty fic. And I am such a Simon fangirl. And the Simon/Kaylee bit at the end just had me grinning at the cuteness, despite the fact that it’s not a pairing that particularly interests me.
Multi-chapter compressed onto one page again, dammit, split it into chapters why don’t you, complete.

Firefly 7:33 pm

Invisible Lines of Propriety
Characters/Pairings: One-sided River/Simon. Kind of. Except not quite.
Warnings: Vaguely incestual. Duh. Do I need to warn for that if I mention River/Simon?
Summary: River explores her brother’s body as though it’s an almost forgotten map.
Comments: This is just a beautiful little fic that’s just so River it’s heartbreaking.
One-shot, complete.

Firefly 4:03 pm

Ties That Bind
Characters/Pairings: Simon/Kaylee, River, ensemble cast. Basically everyone shows up, but those three are the focus.
Warnings: None
Summary: When Serenity visits Kaylee’s home planet, it turns out that Simon and River’s godfather is the governor of the planet. When he discovers Simon and River’s presence and invites their parents to visit him, things look disastrous for the Tam siblings.
Comments: A long, fun plotty story with an original premise. It’s a nice look at how Simon and River might interact with their parents after, well, everything, and how Simon, in particular, has changed. It’s well-written, and I could not stop reading it because I was flat out fascinated by what was going to happen. The interactions with Kaylee’s family are fun, though frankly, I think they suffered due to being put in the same fic as the Simon meets his parents plot. Just because I thought they could be decently done in a fic on their own, but with meeting Simon’s parents and having Simon and River being held captive by their parents who didn’t believe Simon, frankly, I almost forgot about them. But it’s still a damn good fic.
Multi-chapter put on one page damn you all, complete.

FireflyNovember 13, 2005 7:31 pm

Memories of Guns
Characters/Pairings: Zoe and Wash’s child, rest of cast.
Warnings: None
Summary: What kind of childhood would Zoe and Wash’s child have, anyway? This one.
Comments: …This is what Zoe and Wash’s child would grow up with. Lots of memories of guns and violence, but at the core, they’d be at the center of a surprisingly functional family.
One-shot, complete.

Firefly 3:57 pm

Growing Up
Characters/Pairings: Simon/River. Kind of.
Warnings: Incestual not-particularly-graphic sex. Of a… hell if I know how to describe the issues involved in a simplified way.
Summary: River’s growing up, and has all the urges that a seventeen year old girl would.
Comments: This is just perfectly, perfectly, what a Simon/River fic should be. I, personally, only can stand Simon/River when it’s one-sided on River’s part, and that’s what this is. It’s disturbing, and makes me just want to hug Simon and tell him that River’s going to get better, and god I like Simon in this.
One-shot, complete.

Firefly 3:17 pm

One Thing or Another
Something Old
Something New
Characters/Pairings: River/Kaylee
Warnings: Sex in the second one
Summary: River changes and changes Kaylee with her.
Comments: I much, much preferred the first one to the second. Mainly because the first one was gen and, well, I have a deep and mostly unfulfilled love of gen. And the first one is one of the best River perspectives I’ve seen. But the second… I have a slight fondness for River/Kaylee. They aren’t my favorite, but I like it nonetheless. And the author manages to capture a lot of the dynamics of what their relationship would be here.
One-shot, complete.

Crossovers, Miscellaneous, FireflyNovember 12, 2005 7:09 pm

The Things I Cannot Change - A Firefly/Smallville crossover
Characters/Pairings: Simon/Lex. No, really. Mentions of Lex/Clark.
Warnings: Sex. Non-graphic rape.
Summary: When a few of Serenity’s crew run across a bald man dying in the desert, they hardly suspect how much he’s going to affect their lives.
Comments: Long, well-done, and I have no idea how well the two Smallville characters are characterized, but I can certainly see the canon characters in Firefly in their characterizations here. I thought the author did an excellent job of merging two series that I sure didn’t think it would be possible to merge. And really, I’m kind of a sucker for that. I’ll admit to being really, really doubtful that Clark in any way whatsoever resembles canon!Clark, but I’m also giving the author a fair amount of leeway there because hell, five hundred years and the death of your home planet can change a man. And Simon and Lex’s relationship was just fun.
Notes: This Firefly fanfic archive has a tendency to put all their chapters on one page if the fic’s finished, so I’m kind of torn on whether to call it a multi-chapter or not. Since I usually mention that more to let people know that they’re going to be clicking through various pages than any other reason. Not that I totally didn’t notice that it was a multi-chapter on at least one fic that I already recced from this archive or anything. Eh, well. I guess it doesn’t really matter which one I choose.
Multi-chapter, complete.

FireflyNovember 8, 2005 5:01 pm

Eavesdown
Characters/Pairings: Simon, Kaylee
Warnings: None
Summary: Kaylee and Simon’s first meeting, when she convinces him to book passage on Serenity.
Comments: Gen fic! Yay! Well, vaguely heterosexual genfic, but hey, it’s Kaylee meeting Simon and deciding he looks tasty. What do you expect? Anyway, this is a surprisingly plausible fic about Simon just before he books passage on Serenity. And it’s just one of those fics that I just know I’m going to have an impossible time remembering that it isn’t canon because the author did such an excellent job of capturing how Simon and Kaylee’s first meeting should have gone.
Notes: At the moment, I’m stealing all my Firefly recs from crack_van, an LJ fic recs community that doesn’t really do anime recs, so I rarely bother with it, but it’s a damn good place for fic recs if you’re into western fandoms. Unfortunately, with the way they have it set up, it’s tedious to navigate their recs by series, so I don’t use them that often even when I’m in western fandoms or they’re guest featuring an anime series.
One-shot, complete.

Letting Go
Patience
Shattered
Some Days
Piercing it Together
Knight’s Move
Black and Silver
Enough
Characters/Pairings: Focuses on Mal/Simon, but the entire cast appears over the course of the arc.
Warnings: Graphic sex, BDSM, cutting, and some consent issues in the third fic of the arc.
Summary: Simon is broken. Mal teaches him how to let go.
Comments: I have a massive weak spot for well-done completely fucked up relationships. And this, well, is. The course of their relationship is excellently plotted, and while I can argue with Simon being as broken in the beginning as he is in this, I also don’t find it entirely implausible either. It’s kind of a slow start, but I liked it a great deal once the author started pulling in the entire cast.
Series of one-shots.

Firefly 1:10 pm

Things that Haunt Us
Characters/Pairings: Simon/Mal
Warnings: Links to a page with ratings for each fic on there.
Summary: Simon and Mal’s relationship develops even as the situation around them remains much the same.
Comments: This… Several of the fics feel like they could be an episode. And it makes me kind of like the Simon/Mal pairing, despite the fact that I mentioned earlier that I’m not that fond of it. And it’s just a well-done series of fic with excellent characterizations of pretty much everyone, really. I could wish that they dealt more with Inara and Mal’s feelings for each other, but sadly, I expect implied het couples to be completely ignored in slash, so whatever. (And incidentally? That, more than anything is what caused me to go back into reading mostly het fics. I like slash, but mostly I want it to at least have some visible subtext in canon.) At least they dealt with Kaylee.
Series of connected one-shots, incomplete.

Firefly 12:07 pm

Fair, The
Characters/Pairings: Inara-centric. Hints of Mal/Inara, but not really any more than canon.
Warnings: None
Summary: For just one day, Inara forgets about being a Companion and relaxes.
Comments: It’s a very interesting look at Inara, when she’s relaxed and not so conscious of being a Companion. Inara’s one of those characters that I’m intrigued by, but don’t really understand, and this helped me understand her a little better.
One-shot, complete.

FireflyNovember 6, 2005 6:46 pm

You Fill Me
Characters/Pairings: Inara/Kaylee. Possibly. It’s right at the edge of me marking it as a pairing or deciding not to do so.
Warnings: None
Summary: Inara brushes Kaylee’s hair as they talk of Inara’s life as a Companion.
Comments: There’s something very sensual about this fic. It’s right at the boundaries of being a gen fic and being a pairing fic, and I like that. And I think Inara and Kaylee’s conversation was excellently done. Kaylee and Inara are both very sensual women, in very different ways, and this fic does a very good job of capturing that. They work well together.
One-shot, complete.
