Man of Mystery
Characters/Pairings: Paul, Akabane, Natsumi
Warnings: None
Summary: Akabane has a routine, that he rarely deviates from.
Comments: Huh. An interesting look at Akabane. I kind of like the differences in the way he comes in daily vs. after a short mission vs. after a long mission. Also, the ending probably amused me way more than it should have.
One-shot, complete.

Crazy
Characters/Pairings: Yamato/Ban
Warnings: None
Summary: “Ban is laughing the first time Yamato kisses him.”
Comments: You know, I honestly couldn’t tell you why I like this fic so much. The mood is very nicely done, and I find Ban’s characterization with Yamato to be interesting. Usually, this is not really a pairing that I’d bother to click on, much less rec, but something about this drabble just kind of clicked for me.
Short one-shot, complete.

Ordinary Business
Characters/Pairings: Akabane
Warnings: Some casual killing. It’s Akabane, what did you expect?
Summary: An ordinary job for Akabane.
Comments: Akabane’s one of my favorite characters in the series, but most fanfics I’ve seen about him make the mistake of making him too evil. Half the fun of his character is the way he’s so low-key. And this is a good fic about a simple retrieval for Akabane.
One-shot, complete.

Charted Territory
Characters/Pairings: Ban/Ginji. Paul, Natsumi.
Warnings: Fluff.
Summary: It’s an ordinary day at the Honky Tonk.
Comments: This just made me melt with the cuteness. “It’s impossible to hear anything, think anything, feel anything with his partner’s calloused fingers pressed right over the flesh and bone that houses the Serpent Bearer and touching him like he’s breakable when he’s really a snake in human form, with skin that if you actually looked at it you could almost see the scales.” And then the mood breaks, and it’s back to Ban and Ginji being the lovable dorks they are, and it’s just cute and sweet and makes me just go aw at them.
One-shot, complete.

Bad Habits, or Get Back: Ban’s Dignity
Characters/Pairings: Ban/Ginji. A little Akabane/Ginji. Paul, Hevn, and Natsumi make appearances.
Warnings: A little sexual innuendo from Akabane.
Summary: On a day that Ginji guilts Ban into quitting smoking, of course nothing goes right.
Comments: You know, what I tend to want out of a GetBackers fic is this. It’s very much in the original feel of the series - Ban and Ginji are dorks, Akabane’s more than vaguely creepy, and Paul, Hevn, and Natsumi are in as support. Basically. I have a soft spot for fics that actually, you know, have Ban and Ginji go on a retrieval. Preferably ones where it doesn’t go incredibly dark. And ones with Mary Sues need to be burned. But this is just a nice, cute little retrieval fic.
One-shot, complete.

A Thousand Thousand Years
Characters/Pairings: Ginji, Ban. Kind of Ginji/Ban.
Warnings: None
Summary: Ban takes Ginji to a museum to see tje dinosaurs.
Comments: This is just utterly cute. And fluffy. And the part where Ban is mentally rhapsodizing about the way Ginji looks when he’s in awe of something that anyone else would find entirely normal damn near gave me a toothache.
One-shot, complete.

Evil Sadistic High School Girls From Hell
Characters/Pairings: Ban, Ginji, Natsumi
Warnings: None
Summary: When Ban and Ginji eat Pore’s lemon-meringue pie, Natsumi requests something in return.
Comments: Is it wrong that Natsumi is rapidly becoming one of my favorite characters in this series? It’s- she’s so cheerfully evil. Look at every single instance of her appearance in the series, and you see someone getting suckered into doing something he really doesn’t want to do because Natsumi wants him to. It’s reallly entertaining. And this is Natsumi at her evil best as she helps Pore…give them an incentive to pay their tab.
Notes: Both these fics I’ve recced so far this morning are from Fic_on_Demand’s June contest to see who can write the most. It’s a great community. And you can request one fic, entirely of your own choosing, every month. And at this rate, pretty much every request out there is going to be fulfilled by the end of June.
One-shot, complete.

Things You Learn)
Pairings: Very light Ban/Ginji. Only there if you’re looking for it really.
Warnings: Fluffy
Summary: Ban teaches Ginji how to read.
Comments: I don’t know what I was thinking going into reading this - probably “I want more Yukimura, dammit”. But this is sweet and cute and managed to make me like it despite the fact that I’m not really in a Getbackers-y mood. She did a good job of nailing Ban and Ginji’s relationship.
One-shot, complete.

GetBackersMarch 29, 2005 9:56 pm

Arcana
Pairings: About as much Ban/Ginji as there is in the original series. And a bit of Shido/Madoka.
Warnings: None
Summary: A series of Tarot themed drabbles about the Getbackers characters.
Comments: I know nothing about the tarot, except maybe the names of a couple of the cards. I tend to find fics and art based off the tarot tiresome and boring. That aside, this was very nicely done. It works very well for all the characters. One thing I would like to note is that it appparently isn’t complete though. Still, what’s there is definitely worth the read.
Series of drabbles, incomplete.

With Enemies Like These
Pairings: None
Warnings: None
Summary: Ginji points something out to Akabane.
Comments: This is just very…not quite cute, not quite hilarious, but good. It’s well-written, interesting, and it fits very well into the Getbackers series.
One-shot, complete.

Natsumi’s Diary
Pairings: Lots of implied.
Warnings: None
Summary: A week in the life of a budding entrepreneur. Natsumi begins to understand why Paul gets so irritated on occasion.
Comments: I have to admit, some of this made me start giggling madly. It wasn’t so much the content, I think , as it was the narrator. Because you get your information filtered through Natsumi, and while I may have a dirty mind, she doesn’t. And that’s why it’s funny.
One-shot, complete.

Going Downhill Fast
Pairings: …Not telling. Lots of implied, mostly for the humor purposes. Both het, yaoi, and yuri.
Summary: Ban’s day just keeps getting worse.
Comments: I didn’t realize what was going on at first, and I think that improved the hilarity value, so I’m not sure what to say. Except that it’s tremendously funny, and poor, poor Ban.
One-shot, complete.

En Passant
Pairings: None
Warnings: None
Summary: Not all first meetings are dramatic.
Comments: The understatement of this makes it. Somehow, the quiet undertone of danger underneath a surface appearance of normality works perfectly for Himiko and Akabane’s first meeting. It fits their relationship quite well, I think.
One-shot, complete.

Sum of the Parts
Pairings: Some Ginji/Natsumi hints. Alas. Mostly gen, though.
Warnings: In the Getbackers fandom, I feel the need to warn for lack of yaoi. Well, Kazuki’s semi-iffy, but I don’t think it’s really possible to write him straight. Even if someone’s pairing him wirth Ren. There are also extensive mentions of BDSM, and crossdressing. And has a Hello Kitty bondage doll, which I desperately want. *coughs*
Summary: The Getbackers have a case that goes even more wrong than usual.
Comments: Kinkiest Getbackers het fic I’ve ever seen. Author even has a pretty decent knowledge of BDSM. But that isn’t all of it, of course. It’s well written, and she actually manages to deal with Natsumi as a three-dimensional character. And I have an entirely irrational fondness for Natsumi. She’s so cheerfully evil. And the part where she’s dressing the Getbackers in the costumes for the night cracked me up. My life is made complete by the author describing Ban in costume as Akabane in drag. And it’s long, and plotful, and suspenseful, and does feel like a Getbackers episode in a lot of ways.
Multi-chapter, complete.

GetBackers, ThreesomesMarch 16, 2005 4:19 pm

Untitled fanfic
Pairings: Ban/Ginji/Himiko. No, really.
Warnings: Mentions of sex. Implied yaoi.
Summary: Ban and Himiko have a heart to heart and things…develop.
Comments: You know, all of a sudden I feel bombarded with threesomes. I haven’t even had to go looking for them! Although I have to admit, a Ban/Ginji/Himiko threesome is something I had absolutely never thought of before. Anyway, this is surprisingly well-written, and the characters feel right for being in a crack pairing. I liked the way he handled Ban/Ginji within the pairing, since that was something I was expecting to be sort of iffy about. But he managed to pull off the right note on how their relationship works. And really, I’m pretty happy with finding this.
One-shot, complete.

Learning Experiences
Pairings: None
Warnings: Some sexual innuendo
Summary: Ban and Ginji are invited to Natsumi’s school to be fine, upstanding role models.
Comments: I am convinced that Natsumi just invited them for the cheap laughs she was going to get. XD That aside, it’s funny and cute and just very Getbacker-y.
One-shot, complete.

Still-Life, With Pumpkins
Pairings: None
Warnings: None
Summary: It’s a quiet Halloween at the Honky Tonk. Sort of.
Comments: You know, I wish I could write summaries. That aside, I like this fic. The author managed to nail the characters pretty well, and it’s just - a nice, quiet read. And Akabane’s jack-o-lantern is one of my favorite things ever.
One-shot, complete.

The Mickey
Pairings: Ban/Ginji, Shido/Madoka
Warnings: None
Summary: When Shido finds Ban drugged out of his mind, he reluctantly helps him. Ban is disturbingly honest.
Comments: I like this fic. It’s rare to see Shido and Ban interaction fics like this - friends of a odd and argumentative sort, not enemies and for god’s sake, not lovers. And I like seeing Ban off-guard like this. He’s just such a difficult character to get right underneath his masks, but I think X-parrot did a nice job of characterizing him.
One-shot, complete.

The Wake
Pairings: Seems to be going in a Ginji/Natsumi direction now. Alas. What’s wrong with good old Ban/Ginji, dammit?
Warnings: An OC. Really.
Summary: A street urchin discovers just how hard it is to make an enemy out of Ginji.
COmments: Okay, at the start, this fic has a number of things that should make me roll my eyes and wander off. It’s mostly written from the viewpoint of a male OC street kid who Ginji adopts. Can we say Gary Stu? It looks to be pairings up Ginji/Natsumi, which is a pairing I tend to look blankly at and go “Why, dammit? Why?” (Though I feel the need to note that there is at least one other Ginji/Natsumi which I’m planning on reccing. When I get around to it. But overall, that’s a massive, massive turnoff for me). In the second chapter, Ginji mentions being a weaker fighter than Ban, which irritates me because I’ve always seen them as being equal.
But why do I like it? Because Ginji and Ban are just so perfectly in character (except for that one peccadillo I already covered). Ginji’s sweet, concerned to the point of absurdity over other people, friendly, protective, and just…it reminds me of why he’s my favorite GetBacker when Ban fits the profile of my favorite characters so much better. Ban is his usual snarky, aggressive self who only puts up with the damn street rat because Ginji likes him, dammit. And if that isn’t Ban, then what is? I’ll admit I’m very skeptical of whether or not the OC’s going to butcher Ban’s hcaracter by making him friendly to the OC later on, but well, for now, it’s a good read.
Mullti-chapter, incomplete.

S
Pairings: Mild mild mild Ban/Ginji. Could easily be gen
Warnings: None
Summary: It’s an important date for Ban and Ginji.
Comments: It almost gave me a toothache, it was so sweet. But it’s just, Ban and Ginji are just that sweet together and I can see that happening in the actual series. And the little touches, like Ginji having never wrapped a present before, are just cute. And sweet.
One-shot, complete.
