Empire of the Senseless
Pairings: None
Warnings: None
Summary: (Stealing part of the author’s summary, because I like it) Ginny Weasley is by and large a failure, and therefore a perfect candidate for taking up politics.
Comments: To be honest, I tend to think of this as more of a Discworld fanfic than a Harry Potter one, because, ignoring the actual universe it’s set in, it is very much in the Discworld feel. Which is why I like it, but I think she really overdid it. But characterizing Ginny as pretty much a young Granny Weatherwax amuses me. And I have a weakness for anything that looks like it’s going to be dealing with politics and Machiavellian characters. By which standards, this is very good.
Multi-chaptered, incomplete.
The Holly and the Ivy
Pairings: Harry/Ron/Hermione
Warnings: Implied threesome
Summary: A series of connected drabbles dealing with their relationship.
Comments: Shorter than I’d really like, and not enough to fulfill my current craving for trio-fic, but it’s nicely written. And I like the Hermione/Ron fluff. And I never like Hermione/Ron fluff.
One-shot, complete.
Trefoil
Pairings: Harry/Ron/Hermione
Warnings: Angst. Het. Slash. Sex.
Summary: As the war approaches, Harry and Ron and Hermione turn towards each other.
Comments: This is good. This is very good. I like trio fic, but so much of it is pure porn, and that bores the crap out of me. A fic like this, that’s looking at their relationship developing, vaguely surreal and disjointed, but working nonetheless…I’m thrilled. I tend to somewhat enjoy fics that are dealing with the approach to the war with Voldemort, and for this to be a well-written trio fic as well is far too rare. The only thing that would make me happier would be for me to find a trio fic with a long and complex plot.
One-shot, complete.
The Best Defense
A Good Offense
Pairings: Hiei/Kurama, Kuwabara/Yukina
Warnings: Slash
Summary: A rare example of a *insert crossver characters here*-goes-to-Hogwarts story done right.
Comments: I’ll be honest here. I love crossovers. I adore them. I worship them. I went through a six month period three or four years ago where all I read was crossovers. And most of them are among the worst pieces of crap I have ever read. This is not one of those crossovers.
First off, the author is fairly good about not just pulling things out of her ass. While there’s a couple things I’m sort of iffy about in the beginning (Hiei being able to give Keiko enough magic to go to Hogwarts, for example. I’d be more forgiving if Keiko had actually had a role to play in the 50-odd chapters currently up), the author obviously does her research and has an endless supply of random trivia to add flavour to her fic. It’s well-written, in a manner that is reminiscent of the Harry Potter series. The author mostly manages to balance out the huge character cast relatively evenly, though she does tend to concentrate a tad more on Kurama than I think she probably really should. But I have a nostalgic affection for Kurama (as one half of my first yaoi OTP lo those many years ago), so frankly, I don’t exactly object to much. I would suggest that any readers be familiar with both series, though, unless you’re the type who likes to find new series through crossovers.
Edited on June 19, 2005 to add a new working link since ff.net is being their usual wonderful self and decided to take it down.
Edited on October 1, 2005 to add a new link with all the chapters up to date, as well as add the sequel to it.
The Best Defense: Multi-chapter, complete.
A Good Offense: Multi-chapter, incomplete.
The New Defence Teacher
Pairings: None
Warnings: Ed temper tantrum XD
Summary: Defense against the Dark Arts Professor Roy Mustang brings in an…unusual… specimen for his class to study.
Comments: *dies laughing* Random, unexpected, WTF-ness that manages to be absolutely hilarious. Poor Ed.
One-shot, complete.
