Honestly, it is well-written, and I liked the way the author characterizes Yozak. His tendency towards crossdressing tends to be overlooked in fandom, and it’s a shame. Yozak looks damn good in drag.

Comments: You know, I kind of got to love a fic that starts with “Yozak Gurrier thought – more than once – Ken Murata would have made an excellent spy.” Because that’s something that a) Yozak would think, partially because he’s observant like that, and partially because, well, Yozak’s a spy, and people tend to think of other people in terms of what they themselves are, and b) is very, very true. Especially as I understand certain spoilers. This is just the first Yozak/Murata fic I’ve found where I just think that they’re both characterized correctly, and that makes me very happy.

Comments: I have…issues with the characterization of this. Neither Yozak nor Murata really strike me as being them in this. At the same time, it’s a short, cute fic that fulfills my Yozak/Murata cravings, and I enjoyed it. And it covers a scene in the anime that I desperately wanted to know more about. So… I don’t know.

Past Pain and Past Yesterday

Summary: Jose hears about Christine’s death, and finally hears who she truly was. When he later meets a calm and cheerful little boy, he begins to understand.
Comments: God, I love fics that deal with Jose and Murata when Jose first met Murata. Seriously. I think that that is one of the best ficcing opportunities in the entire series. And I think this is the second I’ve come across, and the first was my own (that will never leave my notebook, thank you very much. It sucks.) And this just does it nicely. I can really see canon!Murata in her characterization of him, and Murata’s one of those characters that’s just kind of hard to characterize.

Summary: The Sage has many, many regrets.
Comments: I read this, and originally wasn’t going to rec it because angst and betrayal is really not my thing. But then she continues it in the comments and resolves it with a happy ending. And I may hate unresolved angst, but I am a sucker for angst with happy endings. And it’s just really kind of an interesting look at the Sage.
Notes: I was going through my Star Wars bookmarks looking for recs, and all I can say is good GOD, I have bad taste in Star Wars fics. I found genderswitch. I found Mary Sue!Obi-Wan. I found mpreg. Where Obi-Wan, and I’m not joking here, required further “genetic input” from the father, Qui-Gon, while he was pregnant in order to survive. And Qui-Gon had impregnated him under the influence of a high fever, and didn’t remember a thing. And Obi-Wan refused to trap Qui-Gon into marriage by telling him about his pregnancy. And Anakin was soul-bonded to the fetus. What. The. Hell.

Comments: Just…a really interesting look at the Sage and Shinou. One of the really kind of frustrating things about them, for me at least, is the fact that they don’t have names. But this is the first fic I’ve seen dealing with a possible reason that they don’t have names. And I just find it interesting.

Summary: Gwendal overhears a conversation that he wasn’t meant to overhear, that changes the way he views his childhood head.
Comments: Wow. Just wow. A beautifully in-character fic that does an excellent job of changing Gwendal’s and Anissina’s relationship into something that at least admits the possibility of romance. And did I mention the characterization? Anissina’s characterization in particular is just perfect.

One Last Adventure, sidestory

Summary: The young sage learns a lesson. And wonders if it perhaps has broader applications than his mentor dreams.
Comments: I am eternally fascinated by the Sage, and this is a wonderful look at how he might have been.

Learning Experiences

Summary: Christine wants to do something shocking, something she’s never done before.
Comments: Wow. This is just a beautiful, amazing look at Christine. I’m just amazed at the odd way parallels between her life and her first life are drawn, and how she’s so different, and yet so much he same between lives. And how she changes and it’s just… I’m babbling, and I know I’m babbling, because it’s just. That. Good.
Edited because I just realized: It’s friendslocked, but on a community, so all you need to do to read it is join the community. I wouldn’t usually recommend f-locked fics, but this is so worth it.

Comments: Easily one of the best Conrad fics yet. I don’t think I’ve seen a fic before that has such a solid grasp of Conrad’s character. The Conrad/Yuuri aspect is well-done, and it’s just a stunningly well-done fic.

To the Fullest

Summary: Christine, Murata’s last life, doesn’t want Shinou. Doesn’t like Shinou. And destroys her life attempting to be everything Shinou doesn’t want her to be.
Comments: Huh. A very interesting look at Murata’s past life. According to the author, Christine was a porn star. I find that funnier than I probably should. It’s… a little stereotypical for a porn star/prostitute character, but it’s interesting. I like her and Jose’s relationship. And the ending with Murata meeting Jose was nicely done.

Possession
Characters/Pairings: Shinou/Murata, Wolfram/Yuuri, implied onesided Murata/Yuuri
Warnings: Sex. More than vaguely non-consensual sex. A very dark look at Murata and Shinou’s relationship.
Summary: Shinou visits Murata.
Comments: This is, as far as I know, a completely new look at Murata and Shinou’s relationship. As such, I am immensely intrigued by this. The author is very good at portraying Murata’s darker side. This line, in particular, was so perfectly Murata that I just…stopped at it for a second: “But he knew better than to do things just because he could. It was a lesson he wished certain other people in his life would learn.” Because a lot of what I see in Murata is that very… restrained strength, as though there’s always more that he can do, but he chooses not to because the situation isn’t dire enough. And in and of itself, that could be a tragedy, because I don’t think there is a situation that’d bring out Murata’s full strength anymore, because it’s almost like he’s forgotten to give something his all. And in a way, that’s sad.
…But that has nothing to do with this fic except ramblings that were caused by a line in it. What this is is a dark as all hell look at Shinou and Murata’s relationship if Shinou were, well, a controlling asshole. And it’s interesting because, well, Shinou hasn’t exactly impressed me with his thoughtfulness of other people’s feelings, and frankly, this interpretation is as good as any other. And it’s a new interpretation, and I adore that.

Time: A Drabble in Six Parts

Summary: A series of Conrad and Yuuri character vignettes.
Comments: Before I was ever a Murata Ken fangirl, I was a Conrad/Yuuri fangirl. (But I have the attention span of a mayfly that just drunk a gallon of coffee, so… my interests never last long.) And this was my favorite fanfic. The mood of this fic is soft, almost ominous in a way that foreshadows the events to come. (…Conrad, you idiot. And yes, I say this even with full knowledge of why he did what he did.) There’s a fair amount of humor there as well, that I found immensely entertaining. And I would desperately like to know what Anissina’s “Sexy Sucking-san” actually does. Heh. But more than that is the mood of the fic. It… has the calmness and serenity almost that I associate with Conrad/Yuuri, with an undertone that says “They’re happy and cheerful now, but we all know what happens next.” And I like fics that manage to pull that type of complex sort of mood off.

Comments: Well, we all know that I’m a complete sucker for Murata. I’m not a big fan of the twenty facts meme hopping around livejournal, but somehow, with Murata, it seems to work. I think it’s because there’s so much you can see in Murata’s character, that it serves as an interesting insight into his character. Besides, I found this line absolutely hilarious: “During the state dinner with the dignitary who looked exactly like Sephiroth from Final Fantasy VII, the only thing that made it bearable was looking across the table at Yuuri’s expression of badly suppressed horror and knowing that he saw the same thing.”

There are never enough Murata-centric fics, and this one has a nice view of how Murata plausibly thinks, and views the world. And the Conrad/Murata pairing works in this, in a strange and kind of bizarre way. And Yuuri still remains the focus of both of them, as it should be.
