Crossovers, Miscellaneous, FireflyJuly 6, 2006 7:31 pm

Refuge - The author would prefer not to name the series it’s crossed with. I disagree, but I’ll follow the author’s preferences. If you’re that curious, skip to the bottom of the fic just long enough to see the names. Not that I did that. Of course not.
Characters/Pairings: Mal, Zoe, Wash, Inara, River, Simon, Jayne, Book
Warnings: None’
Summary: Serenity is hired to transport some refugees.
Comments; I have to say, at first, this didn’t quite work for me because I misinterpreted where they were going with this. However, upon reread, it works, and works really rather well. It really manages to fit both series quite nicely, and I have a huge weakness for that.
One-shot, complete.

Venificus Ex Machina - A Belgariad/CSI crossover
CHaracters/Pairings: Belgarath, Grissom
Warnings: None
Summary: Grissom deals with a strange case and a mysterious old man.
Comments: I debated long and hard about reccing this, because it’s such a very odd fic. And I’m completely unfamiliar with CSI, and don’t generally read fanfic in book fandom for many reasons. But, from my perspective, this is oddly enough an excellent outsider-perspective of Belgarath. I have a fondness for random-person-thinking-about-familiar-characters fics, and to me, this is an excellent example of the kind. Now, to a CSI fan who’s completely unfamiliar with the Belgariad, I have no idea what their impression of this fic would be. But I enjoyed it nonetheless. Besides, I have a fondness for crack that’s internally consistent.
One-shot, complete.

Crossovers, Miscellaneous, Petshop of HorrorsJune 23, 2006 7:34 pm

sweet Delight
Characters/Pairings: D, Leon, Willy, Charlie, rest of cast mentioned
Warnings: None
Summary: Count D gets one of the golden tickets
Comments: This is just such a brilliant concept executed so very well that I don’t really know what to say.
One-shot, complete.

MiscellaneousJune 20, 2006 5:23 pm

Even Later - Into the Woods (The Sondheim musical)
Characters/Pairings: The Baker, his Wife
Warnings: None
Summary: After everything, the Baker talks to his Wife.
Comments: This is a fandom that I absolutely never expected to see fic for. But I ran across it, and it’s damn good. It…feels right, like it belongs in the series. It has much the same feel as the second act of the musical did, and I like that. And Into the Woods is my favorite play ever, so I like that.
One-shot, complete.

MiscellaneousJune 12, 2006 4:05 pm

Haphephobia - Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Characters/Pairings: Charlie, Mr. Wonka
Warnings: Um. Disturbingness?
Summary: “He doesn’t like to be touched. Neither does Charlie, anymore.”
Comments: You know, when I was younger, I loved Roald Dahl’s books. They were creepy and fantastic and I desperately wanted to be Matilda. Or Charlie, or… actually not James, but that’s because James is my brother’s name, and that would’ve been weird. But I ran across this fic, and it’s just kind of something I could see happening to Charlie in the future, and just… it worked for me. I don’t think I could explain why I liked it any better than that.
One-shot, complete.

Miscellaneous, Camp Fuck You DieMay 27, 2006 10:44 am

Untitled
Characters/Pairings: Allen from D.Greyman and Ari from Okage
Warnings: None
Summary: Allen talks about someone from home
Comments: I love Ari and Allen’s relationship in CFUD. It’s… I don’t quite know how to describe it, but it just works for me. And this is a great, great drabble for their relationship.
Things to know about CFUD: Ari is emo king. Allen is his big brother protector/advisor figure. Well, one of them. CFUD is extremely unpleasant for most the people there.
One-shot drabble, complete.

Miscellaneous, Camp Fuck You Die, Kingdom HeartsMay 26, 2006 10:19 am

Untitled
Characters/Pairings: Axel/Roxas, Tomo (from Azumanga Daioh)
Warnings: Non-graphic sex, um, photography
Summary: Tomo walks in on a delicate situation.
Comments: God, this cracked me up probably more than it should have. Tomo is just so very…Tomo and UTTERLY IRREPRESSIBLE and Axel and Roxas’ reactions are just beautiful. Something you should know about CFUD, if you don’t follow it: Tomo has kind of made friends with Axel and Roxas, in the “Hey, I tease you and you tease back” kind of way. Her nickname for Axel is “Pornstar Butt” and Axel’s nickname for her is “Sugar Buns”. There’s kind of a reason, but mostly they just think it’s funny to call each other that, as far as I can tell. So…yeah.
One-shot drabble, complete.

Crossovers, XXXHolic, MiscellaneousApril 23, 2006 10:46 am

Restitution (Ranma/XXXholic)
Characters/Pairings: Happosai, Yuuko.
Warnings: None
Summary: Happosai gropes the wrong woman.
Comments: Best Ranma crossover EVER. Because Yuuko’s reaction is so perfect, and so UTTERLY EVIL.
One-shot, complete.

MiscellaneousApril 11, 2006 2:51 pm

Divergence - Chrono Trigger
Characters/Pairings: Lucca, Marle, Frog
Warnings: None
Summary: When Lucca goes back in time to save a town destroyed by the forest Robo planted, all their hard work is undone, as Crono has now never been born.
Comments: This is an excellent, excellent fic. It deals wonderfully with ideas that Chrono Trigger presented, but frustratingly never explored. (And if they did in Chrono Cross, I don’t know about it because I never finished playing it). The Entity is explored a little, and the paradoxes of time travel are explored in depth. And also, the characterizations are well-done. A lot of my problem with most video game fanfics, is that much of the time characters are left flat (note: I pretty much quit playing videogames about the time PS2 came out, so that complaint, from what I’ve seen, may not still be valid). I still have internal debates over whether the fleshing out of the characters is done realistically, but the author made them fun to read about, and I can see traits that were a part of their characterization within the game.
Multi-chapter, incomplete. (And last updated a year and a half ago. *sigh*)

Fullmetal Alchemist, XXXHolic, Prince of Tennis, Miscellaneous, Fruits Basket, Petshop of HorrorsFebruary 25, 2006 8:14 pm

Untitled
Characters/Pairings: Yuuko appears in all. And, separated by comma if they appear within the same drabble, separated by semi-colon if they appear in the next drabble, are: Dumbledore; Yuki; Hanajima; Watanuki, Ed (by implication), Ryoma (by implication), D (by implication)
Warnings: None
Summary: 7 drabbles here, five of which I rec. (The other two I don’t even know the bloody series they’re from, but I’ll assume they’re good if you know what they are.)
Comments: Yes, this is further evidence that xxxHolic can be crossed over with anything well. And some of the interactions are just amazingly well done. My favorite line was “She’s a tall woman, with an impressive rack, but something about her makes you keep your eyes slightly above her collar bone at all times.” describing Yuuko, because if that isn’t how Yuki would view Yuuko, I read the wrong manga for them both. And the last drabbles is sheer genius. Because I said so.
Multiple drabbles, complete.

Crossovers, Miscellaneous, DiscworldDecember 29, 2005 11:35 am

bravecows: Partners in Crime - Lord of the Rings/Discworld
Characters/Pairings: Legolas, Gimli. Probable future Legolas/Gimli, but that’s not in evidence at the moment
Warnings: None
Summary: Gimli is an ordinary hard-working dwarf in the Ankh Morpork City Watch, when he is assigned a new partner. Who just happens to be an elf.
Comments: Yes, Gimli is reacting as to a traditional PTerry elf. I’m not sure how this is going to affect Legolas’ characterization as yet, but if this fic continues to be as good as it is, it’s going on my top ten favorite fics ever. Because it’s Legolas and Gimli in Discworld. How could I not love that?
Theoretically multi-chaptered, incomplete.

MiscellaneousDecember 20, 2005 10:26 pm

On the Outside - Gravitation
Characters/Pairings: Tatsuha/Ryuuichi
Warnings: …None that I can think of. (God, I suck at warnings. I know at least one time I’ve actually forgotten there was a sex scene in a fic I was reccing because I skipped it over entirely. I’m pretty sure I didn’t do that in this one, but take my warnings with a grain of salt, okay?)
Summary: Tatsuha is resigned to being the good son, until he comes to Tokyo and is befriended by his idol.
Comments: The author does a damn good job of portraying Tatsuha as a realistic (to me, at least) teenager. He’s selfish, and occasionally thoughtless, a little rebellious, but when it comes down to it, he does care about his family. It’s long, which I like, but it has no real plot that I can discern, which I don’t like. Overall, though, it’s easily one of my favorite Gravitation fics. (Er. The fact that I can’t stand Shuichi probably helps with that though. Gravitation is one of those series where I hate the main characters and love the side characters. Sadly, the side characters don’t get written about that often, it seems.)
Notes: I am done with finals, done with my secret santa, halfway through my Christmas shopping, a third of the way through my holiday baking, and three quarters of the way through building my new computer. Meaning, I probably have enough time to get back to reccing now. Sorry about the break. I should note that I have a family situation developing that may lead to a sudden stop in recs at some point, but I’m really hoping that doesn’t happen, for more reasons than just this site.
Multi-chapter, incomplete.

Crossovers, Miscellaneous, FireflyNovember 12, 2005 7:09 pm

The Things I Cannot Change - A Firefly/Smallville crossover
Characters/Pairings: Simon/Lex. No, really. Mentions of Lex/Clark.
Warnings: Sex. Non-graphic rape.
Summary: When a few of Serenity’s crew run across a bald man dying in the desert, they hardly suspect how much he’s going to affect their lives.
Comments: Long, well-done, and I have no idea how well the two Smallville characters are characterized, but I can certainly see the canon characters in Firefly in their characterizations here. I thought the author did an excellent job of merging two series that I sure didn’t think it would be possible to merge. And really, I’m kind of a sucker for that. I’ll admit to being really, really doubtful that Clark in any way whatsoever resembles canon!Clark, but I’m also giving the author a fair amount of leeway there because hell, five hundred years and the death of your home planet can change a man. And Simon and Lex’s relationship was just fun.
Notes: This Firefly fanfic archive has a tendency to put all their chapters on one page if the fic’s finished, so I’m kind of torn on whether to call it a multi-chapter or not. Since I usually mention that more to let people know that they’re going to be clicking through various pages than any other reason. Not that I totally didn’t notice that it was a multi-chapter on at least one fic that I already recced from this archive or anything. Eh, well. I guess it doesn’t really matter which one I choose.
Multi-chapter, complete.

Crossovers, Yu Yu Hakusho, MiscellaneousSeptember 17, 2005 8:25 pm

Tomodachi - a crossover with Yu Yu Hakusho and Fushigi Yuugi
Characters/Pairings: …Okay! Let’s see… Yuusuke, Kurama/Hiei, Kuwabara, Chiriko, Miaka, Tamahome, Nuriko, entire Fushigi Yuugi cast basically
Warnings: None
Summary: When the Reikai Tantei are cast in the book, shortly after Amiboshi is discovered and Chiriko is found, what changes?
Comments: Heh. This is a series I’ve liked for years now. Half of this, I’ll admit, is a nostalgia rec. But this series singlehandedly causes me to want to dig out my ancient Fushigi Yuugi, and rewatch it every single time. It’s just…I have a weak spot for crossovers that are done right. This one - I could critique how easily the Reikai Tantei are accepted by the Suzaku Seishi, but in all honesty, it was pretty well done. And I just get a nice, warm feeling whenever I read Yuusuke and Chiriko’s interactions. So, yes. I’m babbling, aren’t I?
Multi-chapter, incomplete.

Miscellaneous 4:47 pm

Der Schwarze Traum - Weiss Kreuz
12
   Side-story: Deliver Me
Characters/Pairings: Schwarz/Weiss. Schuldig/Aya, Brad/Yohji, Farfarello/Ken, Nagi/Omi.
Warnings: Mature themes. Rape, torture, betrayal, etc. Non-graphic, but read at your own risk.
Summary: When Weiss discovers that everything that Schwarz are good guys, that Kritiker has brainwashed and manipulated them, that Reiji Takatori is innocent of any wrongdoing, what do they do next?
Comments: Madamhydra combines her talent for pulling off off-the-wall ideas with an idea I find intriguing. Very well done, very intriguing. Very, very AU and takes interesting liberties with the characterization of virtually everyone, but I can forgive that quite easily when the fic is this good.
Multi-chapter, incomplete.

MiscellaneousSeptember 11, 2005 4:09 pm

The Problematic Courtships of Prince Ludwig - Ludwig Kakumei
Characters/Pairings: slight Ludwig/Wilhelm
Warnings: Ludwig’s stubbornness about only marrying a stacked princess, morbid fairy tale based. Pretty much what you get in the original series.
Summary: Ludwig continues his search for a worthy bride, but continues to fail miserably.
Comments: You know, Ludwig Kakumei is one of those series I never would have expected to find fic for. Too obscure. But god, I love Ludwig. His absolute selfishness (except not quite), his shallowness, his not-quite-slashy relationship with his manservant, all these never fail to amuse me. And I have a massive weak spot for twists on fairy tales. And this fic feels almost exactly like a chapter of Ludwig Kakumei to me. And I just really, really enjoyed that.
Edited May 11, 2006 to fix the link.
One-shot, complete.

MiscellaneousJuly 7, 2005 9:23 pm

Metallic (Gravitation)
Characters/Pairings: Tatsuha. Uesagi the elder.
Summary: Tatsuha reflects on his family at Christmas.
Comments: You know, Gravitation is one of those series that I had a very brief fling with and have had almost no interest in reading any more fic about since then. Except for Tatsuha. I have no idea why I love him so much, but I do. And this fic does an excellent job of a broody Tatsuha. It does feel like the first chapter in a series, though, rather than a one-shot. I wish the author had made whether it was a one-shot or not clearer.

MiscellaneousJune 26, 2005 6:30 pm

Nine Men And A Little Lady
Characters/Pairings: Mary Sue and the entire Fellowship. Some hints of relationships, but mostly Legolas being traumatized by the mind-controlling chick after him.
Warnings: None
Summary: The story of the Tenth Walker. Or a girl magically transported from Earth. Or Aragorn’s twin sister. Or Galadriel’s granddaughter.
Comments; A wonderful, wonderful, Mary Sue parody that never fails to amuse me. The ending journal entry kills me every time. I’m usually not a fan of Mary Sue parodies, but this is just very well done, and I enjoy watching the Fellowship vaguely aware that they’re being brainwashed.
One-shot, complete.

Miscellaneous, Gundam WingJune 25, 2005 6:20 pm

Matters of Principle
Characters/Pairings: Relena/Dorothy
Warnings: Yuri. Vaguely non-consensual.
Summary: Relena and Dorothy discuss pacifism.
Comments: Like every other fangirl on the planet, I was in the Gundam Wing fandom many, many years ago. Relena/Dorothy is the only pairing I retain even the vaguest of interest in and this fic is very well done. And I like the vaguely unreal and dangerous feeling this fic gives.
One-shot, complete.

Crossovers, Miscellaneous, Sailor MoonJune 22, 2005 6:08 am

Destiny’s Child
Characters/Pairings: …The entire casts of Ranma and Sailor Moon. Focusing largely on Ranma/Rei, but with a little Ranma/Akane and Ranma/Hotaru.
Summary: Born 400 years earlier, Ranma fell into the spring of the Drowned Young Girl. His curse can only be activated by near-boiling water, and he has resigned himself to a nigh-unaging existence. When he is offered a cure by Mistress 9, he accepts, and comes to live as Hotaru. How do the events of Sailor Moon S change when Hotaru’s secretly an overpowered 400-year old martial artist with ridiculously bad luck?
Comments: Nowadays, Ranma/Sailor Moon crossovers have utterly lost their popularity. Probably a good thing, considering how bad most of them were. But this one is the one I will always fondly remember because the author does a very good job of working things out from the original premise. I know Ranma’s a Gary Stu in this, but in all honesty, I don’t have a problem with a Gary Stu as long as the story remains fun and entertaining. I have a weakness for very long, completed multi-chapter fics with interesting premises, and this is well-enough written for me to really enjoy it. Hell, the fact that I’m reccing it five years after first reading it should say something. If only that I remembered it for that long.
Multi-chapter, complete.
