The Use of Power - A crossover with the Wheel of Time
Characters/Pairings: Ami, Moiraine Sedai, Lan Mandragoran, Thom, Nynaeve, Rand, Matt, Perrin.
Summary: When Ami falls into the world of the Wheel of Time, she must do whatever she can to help defeat the Dark One.
Comments: You know, a while ago, I just kept seeing Sailor Moon/Wheel of Time or Ranma/Wheel of Time crossovers, and I never quite understood it. Admittedly, I last read the Wheel of Time series five years ago, and only through the fifth book, so I’m not exactly a big fan of it. But you’d think that a series with NO SIMILARITIES TO SAILOR MOON OR RANMA WHATSOEVER wouldn’t be a practical crossover target.
But, whatever. THis rec isn’t about the inexplicability of a Sailor Moon/Wheel of Time crossover. It’s about a fic that made it work, and work well. For starters, the author takes full advantage of the fact that Ami is, quite frankly, a genius from a far more technologicly advanced world, when she starts working to defeat the Dark Lord. But that isn’t it - a lot of the fic so far is about the type of culture clash that would occur if a girl from modern Tokyo fell into a world that was mostly medieval. The sheer inability of each other to understand on occasion what Ami’s world was like - it’s a nicely done outsider POV on our world, that also serves to further illuminate their world as well. I could ramble on about this for forever, but it’s 11:15 and I have to be at work at 8:00 tomorrow, so I’ll shut up.
One chapter of a theoretically multi-chapter fic, incomplete.
And now for something completely different…
Characters/Pairings: Clow, Yuuko, Ashura. Mix and match in whatever way you feel appropriate.
Warnings: Crossdressing
Summary: Yuuko is a crazy woman. And Clow can’t hold his wine.
Comments: This is the Yuuko I love. Utterly batshit insane. And Clow needs to be forced into a dress more often.
One-shot, complete
Sunglasses
Pairings: None
Warnings: Batshit insanity
Summary: Each day, the Smileys go out one by one to die when the Minesweeper loses the game. Those who survive become the king, the one who chooses the Smileys who leave. What happens when the new king rebels against his duty?
Comments: I am never going to look at Minesweeper in the same way ever again. This is just such a strange idea, but the author seems good enough to make it work fairly well.
Multi-chapter, incomplete.
Rainbow Noir
Pairings: NOne
Warnings: It’s eighties kids’ shows noir. It may destroy your fond childhood memories.
Summary: Rainbow Land is dead, and color is almost gone from the world.
Comments: This left me speechless for several minutes after reading it originally. Then I actually printed it out and forced my father and brother to read it. Then I brought it to class and made some of my friends read it. It’s just…it manages to make one of the most wonderfully wrong ideas I’ve ever seen work and work well.
One-shot, complete.
The Official Fanfiction University of Middleearth
Pairings: Gimli/OFC
Warnings: Mary Sue parody. Well done, but still a Mary Sue parody fic.
Summary: Badfic authors are forcibly educated, and Gimli gets the girl.
Comments: I’m rarely fond of Mary Sue parodies. They tend to try to hard. But this is well done, and actually sweet. My biggest problem with it is that the narrator - a badfic author - gets too many privileges, but considering how bored I got in the sequel where the badfic authors are less redeemable, I think the author’s caught between a rock and a hard place on that. And I seem to be going on a Mary Sue parody kick at the moment, despite the fact that they’re rarely any good. Alas.
Multi-chapter, complete.
Rat’s fiction
Pairings: None
Warnings: If you’ve ever played Shadowrun, you’ll know it’s a dark, gritty kind of universe.
Comments: Well, I seem to be breaking my momentary disinterest in fanfics with something really unusual for me. Basically, Rat’s written about six novels, and several shorter works about her character, Winterhawk (a mage shadowrunner), and his team. These are surprisingly well written, and I am desperately in lust with Winterhawk. If you have lots of spare time, go read them all. If you don’t have much spare time, or don’t want to start on a novel-length story, my suggestion would be to start on Wrong Place, Wrong Time. It’s a good novella length fic. I don’t like Rat’s shorter stories that much, as a general rule, though. I tend to be a harder sell on shorter fic if I’m in the mood for long, and I only go to Rat’s site if I’m in the mood for long.
Multiple novels, mostly complete.
Satisfaction
Pairings: Archie/Horatio, Archie/Horatio/Edrington
Warnings: Graphic sex, innuendoes, and threesomes. And slash, of course.
Summary: When Edrington invites Archie and Horatio to his home while they’re on leave, they don’t quite expect his reasons.
Comments: I am far too amused by this fic. It’s the double entendres that rapidly reach the point of single entendres. And the games. And the manipulation. And the sex, of course. But I was basically giggling my way through this.
Multi-chapter, complete.
Ransom
Pairings: Horatio/Archie, OC/Archie, mentions of Simpson/Archie.
Warnings: NCS, both mentioned and current, non-graphic sex, slash.
Spoilers: Having never read the books nor seen the tv show, I have no clue what is spoiled.
Summary: When Horatio, Archie, and Pellew are captured by a pirate for ransom, can they rescue themselves before Archie is driven insane?
Comments: This is not a fandom I ever expected to be reading fic for. But, um, I was recced this a while ago (alas, I forgot where), and it’s well written. The plot’s paced nicely, and there’s just enough hurt/comfort to keep me happy without making me start going “Yes, thank you, I know you’re having fun torturing your favorite character. But keep this up and I’m going to throw up.” Archie, the designated uke of the story, still manages to remain strong throughout his ordeal, and it’s just a nice read. Long, though. My brother’s going to start screaming about his besmirched childhood memories if he ever hears about this.
One-shot, complete.
Undertow
Pairings: Eriko (Rosa Foetida)/Rei (Rosa Foetida en bouton), Rei/Yoshino, Eriko/Rei/Yoshino
Warnings: Rampant yuri, bondage.
Summary: Rosa Foetida dared to seduce Yoshino’s Rei-chan, and Yoshino is determined to get her revenge. Eriko has other plans.
Comments: Marimite doesn’t have many fanfics, and this is the only one I’ve found that’s any good. It’s funny, and I really do like Yoshino and Eriko. And Rei, too, of course. And Eriko’s last line cracks me up. (Okay, and it’s not like the lesbian orgies are a bad thing. Is there any other reason to watch Marimite?)
One-shot, complete.
Nowhere Man
Pairings: Mild Spike/Jet and Knives/Vash.
Warnings: Slash.
Summary: Vash saves Spike from *end of series spoilers*. Now what?
Comments: This should not work as well as it does. But then, I’ve been refusing to watch the last DVD of Bebop ever since I knew what was going to happen, so I like things that fix it up. And this does. And tosses in an interesting characterization of Vash, to boot. I don’t read Trigun fics very often, so I don’t know how common fics where Knives has achieved his Eden on Gunsmoke (somehow without incurring Vash’s disapproval) are, but it’s not a concept I’ve seen before. The characterizations are nicely done, and the Bebop’s reactions to Vash are very well done. It’s basically just a nice fun little read.
Multi-chapter, incomplete.
Responsible Adults
Pairings: Joyce/Giles/Ethan
Warnings: Graphic sex, power plays, bdsm, threesomes, slash
Summary: Joyce and Giles and Ethan are hot together. And there is plot. Sometimes.
Comments: This is probably going to be the last Buffy fic I ever rec. I’ve never seen the series, and have no real desire to do so. However, I frequently complain about the lack of good threesome (or foursome, or more) fics. Well, here’s a series of Buffy fanfics filled with very hot sex, three very interesting people, and the occasional long fic with a plot. Really, what more could I ask for?
Series of one-shots and multi-chapter fics, all of which are complete. The series itself is ongoing, however.
Tennis Sanctuary
Pairings: Lots. And lots. And lots. Once a series starts with the orgies, I’m just giving up on writing the pairings, okay?
Warnings: Slash. Crack. Some graphic sex scenes, but those are warned about.
Summary: What happens when angels, demons, and shinigami start interfering with the PoT boys? Crack and sex, mostly.
Comments: This is a series of loosely connected drabbles written by three main authors. As such, the tone tends to vary from anything from drama, to angst, to complete and utter crack. You have not lived until you have read Ryoma’s suggestion for what Heaven and Hell should do instead of fighting. I also really enjoy their interpretation of Yukimura’s character, even though I get the feeling he’s just a tad more dangerous than in the original series. Still, it’s great fun.
Multi-chapter, open-ended.
