Slayers: Once Burned, Twice Shy
Characters/Pairings: Lina/Naga, Amelia
Warnings: None
Summary: Lina tells Amelia the tale of her ex. Well, kind of.
Comments: Oddly, I’d never thought of Lina/Naga before the first time I read this fic, umpteen years ago. And it remains the only good Lina/Naga fic I’ve ever read. It just…really works well with both their personalities, and I can see it. And I like Chris Davies’ writing style.
One-shot, complete.
The Raye Trilogy
Characters/Pairings: Raye, Serena/Darien, Lita, rest of cast
Warnings: None
Summary: Once upon a time, Raye loved Darien. But her heart isn’t so small as to just love one person.
Comments: I really, really like this fic. It’s… a Raye/Serena story without ever explicitly being a Raye/Serena fic, and I love the way the author dealt with their relationship, and Darien’s impact on their relationship. The writing is excellent, and it’s just… one of those fics I’ve just loved for the past 8 years or so since I first read it. What else can I really say about it?
Series of three one-shots, complete.
sweet Delight
Characters/Pairings: D, Leon, Willy, Charlie, rest of cast mentioned
Warnings: None
Summary: Count D gets one of the golden tickets
Comments: This is just such a brilliant concept executed so very well that I don’t really know what to say.
One-shot, complete.
Borderline
Characters/Pairings: Rukia, Yuuko, Urahara, Renji, Hanatarou, Ichigo
Warnings: Um. Highlight for fic spoilers: Character death
Summary: Rukia gets her powers back, but pays too high a price.
Comments: Okay, I feel like a vaguely bad Rukia fan for reccing this, but damnit, it’s well-done, the concept is excellent, and it works. The author writes Rukia’s slow deterioration well, and the ending caught me by surprise. But damnit, I almost always hate fics like this, but it’s well-done enough that I feel almost obliged to rec it. Because I can appreciate the writing while bawling over what happened to Rukia. Because I’m kind of a Rukia fangirl, in case you hadn’t noticed.
One-shot, complete.
Damnation
Characters/Pairings: D, Desire
Warnings: None
Summary: Desire comes to visit his least favorite great-grandchild
Comments: Wow. I don’t believe I hadn’t recced this already - it’s one of the very few Petshop of Horror fics that get it right. Desire is perfectly done, and his and D’s conversation is just wow. It’s one of those fics that I like so much I just don’t quite know what to say.
One-shot, complete.
Susan’s Horn
Characters/Pairings: Susan
Warnigns: None
Summary: ” “Susan was up to her elbows in rubbishy things when she found it.” Living after the end of the story is never easy, but you can never stop being a Queen of Narnia.”
Comments: I need to learn to write summaries that well. Anyway. This is just a really well-done post-The Last Battle Susan fic. It deals with her sadness and her mourning and her fundamental strength, and I like that. And just… good Susan fics aren’t common enough.
One-shot, complete.
\Accounting no Jutsu
Characters/Pairings: Naruto, village
Warnings: None
Summary: “Lots of people have postulated that Naruto’s good at financial planning. Let’s follow that thought a little farther into the future.”
Comments: This made me laugh and cheer Naruto on. The ending line killed me, but it’s cute and fun and works itself into the Naruto canon fairly well. Oddly, in some ways this almost feels more like a Ranma 1/2 fanfic to me, but it has more to do with the style of writing than anything else. Because it’s the type of fic that I saw a lot of in the Ranma 1/2 fandom when I was in it, but I don’t seem to see a great deal of any more. Which is too bad, because it’s fun
One-shot, complete.
Sailor Decoy
Characters/Pairings: Minako, Rei, Artemis
Warnings: None
Summary: Minako finds out why Sailor V was awoken first.
Comments: For some unbeknownst reason, Minako is my favorite of the Inner Senshi. I don’t know why, because she’s really, really not usually my favorite type of character, but I like her. And this fic is about her coming to grips to not being the sole heroine anymore, and not being the important one. And it’s something that just works very well for me. The writing is well-done, and her conversation with Rei was just extremely well-done. And just… I like a more serious treatment of Minako that isn’t just her as Usagi’s ditzier clone but as a character in her own right.
One-shot, complete.
The boy who gave away his birthday - The Sandman
Characters/Pairings: Christopher Walker, Dream II, Delirium, Desire, Despair, Rose Walker. Christopher Walker/Dream
Warnings: None
Summary: Rose Walker’s son grew up playing with Delirium and talking with Dream.
Comments: Quite simply the best Sandman fic I’ve seen yet at capturing the feel of the original series. It doesn’t deal with the problems a relationship between one of the Endless and an at least partially human boy the way I might wish, but that isn’t really the point of the story. It’s about a boy growing up and falling in love with one of the Endless. And it’s just beautifully well-done.
One-shot, complete.
Paint The Town
Characters/Pairings: Sephiroth, Zack/Aeris
Warnings: None
Summary: Zack decides that Sephiroth needs a friend to introduce him to normal human life. And does so.
Comments: It was rather slow getting into, but by the fifth or sixth chapter, I was laughing at most of the jokes. It’s just cute, funny, and still feels pretty in-character for them both. Fanfiction has a tendency to distort characterization to the extremes (especially minor characters like Zack, who we don’t know a great deal about) but Zack and Sephiroth in this ,i>felt right. And the Hojo bit in the last chapter cracked me up.
Multi-chapter, incomplete.
Even Later - Into the Woods (The Sondheim musical)
Characters/Pairings: The Baker, his Wife
Warnings: None
Summary: After everything, the Baker talks to his Wife.
Comments: This is a fandom that I absolutely never expected to see fic for. But I ran across it, and it’s damn good. It…feels right, like it belongs in the series. It has much the same feel as the second act of the musical did, and I like that. And Into the Woods is my favorite play ever, so I like that.
One-shot, complete.
To Sin Alone
Characters/Pairings: Reno, Rude, Elena
Warnings: Death, dark themes, violence, children involved
Summary: Reno interrogates a failed assassin.
Comments: A lot of the Turk fic I see makes them too good of people. This doesn’t make that mistake. The Reno here is the same Reno I saw in the game - ruthless, and possibly not quite sane. At the same time, he’s still human enough that he feels some twinges of guilt, while doing things that only a pretty terrible human being would do. And the insight on his and Rude’s relationship worked, and it was just an excellent, excellent fic.
One-shot, complete.
The World Can Wait
Characters/Pairings: Reno/Rude, Reno/Tseng, Rufus/Tseng, Zax/Cloud, Cloud/Vincent, Sephiroth, Elena/Reeve, and… I think that’s most of it.
Summary: This isn’t so much a series of fics, as an entire universe of fics. The fics range from PWP to short plotty multi-chapter fics. Short summaries are given for each fic.
Comments: The irritating thing about reccing this universe is that I didn’t really enjoy all of the fics. I enjoyed all the multi-chapter fics, and a fair percentage of the individual fics, but I refuse to go in and link twenty-odd fics because I didn’t particularly enjoy a few of the fics linked here. Because linking is annoying and boring, and I know that I’d miss some fic that was important to the overall plot.
However, for the most part these fics are excellently, excellently done. I’m usually not a big Turk fan, but these made me like them. What particularly fascinated me was the one about Tseng/Rufus, because that was as much Tseng teaching Rufus about the uses of power as it was about their relationship, and I love that. The Reno=rentboy made me roll my eyes at first, but the author didn’t really push it so much as I’m used to. It wasn’t used as an excuse for angst ten years after he quit to become a Turk, and you know, I like that. I really do. I liked the Zax fics, and the Sephiroth fics, and just pretty much most of the fics here.
Connected one-shots and completed multi-chapters.
Tempt Too Well
Characters/Pairings: Crowley, Aziraphale
Warnings: None
Summary: Crowley tempts Aziraphale into playing some FF7
Comments: This is just so amazingly them. I don’t read a lot of Good Omens fanfiction, mainly because so much of it that I see is so horribly OOC. But the author even got their dialogue feeling right, and it’s just so IC and so much in the feel of Good Omens that I can’t help but love it. She even did the footnotes well.
One-shot, complete.
Fusion
Characters/Pairings: Sephiroth/Cloud, Zack, Vincent, Cid, Tifa, Aeris. Mentions of Sephiroth/Zack and Zack/Aeris, but nothing significant.
Warnings: None
Summary: When Cloud is sent back into the past, to before Nibelheim with his memories of defeating Sephiroth intact, what changes?
Comments: Okay, I’ll be frank here. I have issues with this story. I don’t entirely agree with Zack’s characterization and I hate hate hate the way Aeris’ relationship with Zack is almost entirely ignored in favor of slashing him with Sephiroth and Cloud, who are, the author makes clear, pretty damn absorbed in each other. And part of it’s me being a Zack/Aeris fangirl who gets grumpy when their relationship is being ignored, and part of it’s me being grumpy that Zack’s getting pushed into being a third wheel on Cloud and Sephiroth’s relationship, but part of it’s just… I don’t like people ignoring canon relationships. You can get away with it in short fics, but in epic fics, you need to deal with it. And the author isn’t, really.
That aside, I did, for the most part, really enjoy the fic. I thought it was well-written, and I like the way she’s handling the Sephiroth/Cloud relationship. More, I like the plot. Unlike most of the “Go back in time and fix it” fics I’ve seen, she seems to be doing something interesting with the whole “going back” part of the fic. Admittedly, this is at least partially a guess, so… But I like the way she’s writing about Tifa, and about Vincent and Cid and everyone left in the universe Cloud left behind. I get the distinct feeling that that’s going to be important in the part of the story where Cloud’s back in time, and I like that. Also, I’m a sucker for epics. I’ve been in so many small, brand-new fandoms that haven’t had the time to develop epics, that I’ve really, really missed them.
Multi-chapter, incomplete.
I’ve Never
Characters/Pairings: Sephiroth/Aeris/Zack/Cloud
Warnings: None
Summary: The foursome plays I’ve never.
Comments: This just made me laugh and laugh and laugh. And Zack’s idea halfway through was just brilliant.
One-shot, complete.
Against Regulations
Characters/Pairings: Sephiroth/Zack
Warnings: Graphic bloody sex
Summary: Zack pushes and never lets go.
Comments: Wow. The sheer intensity of this fic is beyond belief. It’s one of the very few pure Sephiroth/Zack fics that I really enjoyed, and that really made me feel sorry for Sephiroth. Usually, I’m more of a Zack/Cloud or a Sephiroth/Zack/Cloud fan or a Sephiroth/Zack/Cloud/Aeris fan, but this just caught me. And I liked the explanation of Sephiroth’s uniform, but somehow the soap mention really just drove it into me just how beyond fucked up Sephiroth is.
One-shot, complete.
Conflicts of Interest
Miscellaneous COI side stories and drabbles
Characters/Pairings: Cloud, Sephiroth/Zack, Sephiroth/Cloud, entire cast of FF7
Warnings: Dark themes, split personalities, brutal experiments, mentions of rape, suicide attempts and some ugly murders
Summary: After Sephiroth’s death, Cloud thinks that he’s free to be whole again. But when the WEAPONs start reappearing, and the forgotten parts of his past seem to be the key to understanding, a question arises. Who really is Cloud Strife?
Comments: Madamhydra is easily in my top three favorite fanfic authors ever. And Conflicts of Interest is just…wow. It’s fascinating to read, and I’m just incredibly intrigued by the byplay between personalities. And now that Sephiroth is resurrected, I’m incredibly fascinated by his and Cloud’s relationship. Because it is beyond fucked up, but the potential there is fascinating. Come to think of it, that pretty much describes Cloud in this.
I should, however, note that there are things in this that might make you not want to read it. To be honest, as much as I love Madamhydra’s writing, there are some fics of hers that are just too dark for my taste. This fic…hovered the edge of that for a while. It’s also a pretty outre characterization of Cloud. She does an amazing job of basing that characterization in canon, but… it’s still just not the Cloud you see in the game. It’s incredibly fascinating, incredibly fucked up, and just incredible, not to mention credibly based in canon but it’s very different from any other interpretation of Cloud’s character than I’ve ever seen. That’s something that caused me problems getting into the fic at first, so I felt it deserved some mention.
Multi-chapter + side stories, incomplete.
Homecoming
Characters/Pairings: Riddle, Ed
Warnings: None
Summary: After Camp Fuck You Die, Riddle returns home changed.
Comments: To be honest, I’m pretty damn sure you won’t get it unless you’ve been following CFUD. At which point you probably already know about it, and it’s kind of pointless reccing it. So why am I reccing it? Because I originally made this site to keep track of my favorite fics, damnit. And this made me sparkle madly.
One-shot, complete.
Ravens
Characters/Pairings: Sephiroth/Zack/Cloud
Warnings: None
Summary: “Stories are useful when people listen. Especially stories about immortal things that rule the world.”
Comments: A little too distant from FF7 canon for me to really love it as an FF7 fic, but I love it nonetheless. It’s an interesting fairytale-esque fic, and I love the Norse mythology that the author drew into it. Especially the fact that the author made it work. I’d be fascinated to see the fic the author says that she’s planning on writing that explains this fic. Because my only real problem with the fic is my difficulty fitting it into FF7 canon. If the author managed to do so, then I’d enjoy this fic even more.
One-shot, possibly part of a series at some point in the future. But for now complete, I guess.
